Altay 3-Day Guide: Northern Xinjiang's Secret Realm — Kanas Lake & Hemu Village Smoke
Altay, northern Xinjiang's ultimate hidden gem. Snow peaks of the Altai Mountains, emerald waters of the Irtysh River, Kanas Lake's mysterious lake monster legend, Hemu Village's Tuvan chimney smoke, Baihaba's frontier scenery — this is where "My Altay" unfolds, the real setting of Li Juan's "Winter Pasture." Autumn Altay is one of China's most beautiful places — golden and fiery foliage reflected in azure waters, impossibly beautiful. Even beyond autumn, summer's green meadows and winter's pristine snow are equally enchanting.
🚶 Day 1: Burqin → Kanas Lake
Morning: Depart for Kanas From Altay city (~4 hours) or Burqin (~3 hours). Recommend staying in Burqin the night before. Pass through Jiadengyu — Kanas scenic area gateway — transfer to shuttle bus.
Afternoon: Kanas Lake China's deepest alpine freshwater lake (188.5m max depth). Water changes color by season — emerald green in spring/summer, sapphire blue in autumn, silver-white in winter.
Key highlights:
- Three Bays (Shenxian Bay, Yueliang Bay, Wolong Bay): Each with unique water colors and formations. Yueliang Bay's S-curve channel is most photogenic; Shenxian Bay's morning mist is ethereal
- Fish Viewing Platform: Climb 1,068 steps to summit viewpoint for panoramic Kanas views. On clear days, see Friendship Peak (China-Russia-Mongolia border) across the lake
- Lakeside Boardwalk: Stroll along the lake, feel the crisp water and serene forest
Tickets + shuttle ¥230 (peak) / ¥150 (off-peak). In-park accommodation expensive (¥500-2,000/night); Jiadengyu cheaper (¥200-500).
🚶 Day 2: Hemu Village (Full Day)
Full Day: Hemu Village One of China's most beautiful ancient villages, home to Tuvan people. Log cabins, birch forests, morning mist with chimney smoke — Hemu is a living northern Xinjiang pastoral poem.
Key experiences:
- Hemu Morning Mist: 6-8am, climb to哈登 Platform — watch smoke rise from cabins, mist drift through the valley, birch trees glow gold in sunrise. Altay's most iconic scene
- Horseback Through Birch Forest: Rent a horse (¥80-150/hour), ride through birch groves and meadows, experience Tuvan nomadic life
- Hemu River & Bridge: Clear river runs through the village; the ancient wooden bridge is the best photo spot
- Tuvan Home Visit: Enter a Tuvan home, drink milk tea, eat baorsak (fried dough), hear the sur (traditional instrument)
Tickets + shuttle ¥102. Village wooden guesthouses ¥300-1,500/night. Simple dining, slightly pricey (laghman ¥20-30, kebabs ¥5-8/skewer).
