Changzhou 3-Day City Walk Guide: Dragon City of Jiangnan, Dinosaur Capital
Changzhou, nicknamed "Dragon City," is a seriously underrated Jiangnan gem. It boasts the millennium-old Tianning Zen Temple, the Spring and Autumn Yancheng Ruins, the historic Qingguo Lane, and the phenomenal China Dinosaur Park. A Changzhou local's day: a bowl of silver-thread noodles in the morning, sandpot fish head by Tianmu Lake at noon, and pingtan music in Qingguo Lane at night. Three days to experience dinosaur thrills, Jiangnan water-town charm, ancient heritage, and modern energy.
Day 1: Dinosaur Thrills at China Dinosaur Park + City Nightlife
Full Day: China Dinosaur Park (260 RMB)
One of East China's largest theme parks, a national 5A scenic area. Core zones: Magic Rainforest (home to "Dinoconda," a 4D coaster and the park's crown jewel — claimed to be China's most thrilling), Rubra (spinning coaster + giant pendulum), Dream Manor (family-friendly area), and Dinosaur Museum (real fossil specimens with high educational value).
Tips:
- Visit on weekdays for shorter queues
- Enter at 9am, head straight for Dinoconda and Flying Over Dinosaur Mountain
- Lunch inside the park (dinosaur-themed restaurants, 50-80 RMB/person)
- Catch a "Dinosaur Kingdom" show in the afternoon
- Plan 6-8 hours for the full experience
Evening: Nandajie Commercial Street
Changzhou's liveliest pedestrian street, packed with food options. Must-try: Dama Cake (crispy outside, soft inside, available in sweet and savory), Crab Roe Xiaolongbao (bursting with crab flavor, 25-35 RMB/basket).
Day 2: Ancient Temples and Famous Gardens — Tianning Temple + Hongmei Park + Qingguo Lane
Morning: Tianning Zen Temple (free, Tianning Pagoda 50 RMB)
A millennium-old temple founded in the Tang Dynasty, ranked among the "Four Great Monasteries of the Southeast" alongside Jinshan Temple (Zhenjiang), Gaomin Temple (Yangzhou), and Tiantong Temple (Ningbo). The Tianning Pagoda stands at 153.79 meters — the tallest Buddhist pagoda in the world. Climb to the top for panoramic views of Changzhou. Each floor features exquisite Buddhist art exhibitions.
Lunch: Yinggui Mantou Shop
A century-old Changzhou institution. Must-order: Tofu Soup (the soul of Changzhou breakfast — silky tofu with shredded tofu skin, pickled vegetables, dried shrimp, and egg drop, 8-12 RMB), Silver-Thread Noodles (noodles as fine as hair, available in red or white broth with various toppings, 12-20 RMB).
Afternoon: Hongmei Park (free)
Changzhou's largest urban park, named after the Red Plum Pavilion. Lakes, hills, zigzag bridges, and covered corridors. Sweet osmanthus in autumn, red plum blossoms in winter. Su Dongpo once wrote poems at the Red Plum Pavilion. A favorite walking spot for locals — rent a boat and paddle the lake.
Dusk: Qingguo Lane
"The First Lane of Jiangnan Scholars" — founded in the Ming Dynasty, still preserving numerous celebrity residences: Qu Qiubai's birthplace, Zhao Yuanren's former home, Zhou Youguang's former home, and Tang Jingchuan Memorial Hall. The lane is short but incredibly rich in cultural content. Old houses along the river have been converted into cafes, bookstores, and teahouses. Most atmospheric at dusk when the setting sun illuminates the white walls and dark tiles.
Day 3: Nature's Embrace — Tianmu Lake + Nanshan Bamboo Sea
Full Day: Liyang Direction (about 1.5 hours from downtown Changzhou)
Morning: Tianmu Lake (180 RMB, including cruise)
A national 5A scenic area and one of East China's most beautiful artificial lakes. Crystal-clear water surrounded by green mountains. Take a cruise to Longxing Island and Country Island, stroll the lakeside boardwalk. The absolute must-try is Tianmu Lake Sandpot Fish Head — wild bighead fish from the lake, slow-simmered for hours until the broth turns milky white and incredibly savory, 80-120 RMB/person.
Afternoon: Nanshan Bamboo Sea (90 RMB)
Ten thousand mu of bamboo covering an entire mountain — a natural oxygen bar with extremely high negative ion concentration. Ride the funicular railway up, walk the bamboo forest boardwalk amid endless green, enjoy the cool breeze. At the summit there's a panda house (you can see giant pandas!) and the "Number One Peak of Wu-Yue" observation deck. Perfect for a slow walk and deep breathing.
Evening: Return to Changzhou
If time permits, detour to the Spring and Autumn Yancheng Ruins on the way back — a unique three-city, three-moat layout from the Spring and Autumn period.
