Devinuwara City Walk Guide: Ancient Shrine and Lighthouse Keeper at Sri Lanka's Southernmost Point
Devinuwara (also known as Dondra) lies at Sri Lanka's southernmost tip, about 6 km from Matara — the geographical "end of the land." This unassuming town holds three precious things: a millennium-old temple believed to be guarded by Lord Vishnu himself, Sri Lanka's tallest lighthouse, and a coastline famous for whales and dolphins. Historically, Devinuwara was an important port on ancient Indian Ocean trade routes, where Arab and Chinese merchant ships once docked. The Portuguese named it "Dondra" (meaning "City of Gods"), a name still used today.
