Guyuan (ancient "Yuanzhou") — ancient city in southern Ningxia. Xumishan Grottoes carved in Northern Wei (471-499 AD), earlier than parts of Dunhuang. Liupan Mountain — last mountain the Red Army crossed on the Long March, where Mao wrote "He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man." Huoshizhai's danxia landform is colorful. Day 1: Xumishan Grottoes (50 RMB) → Guyuan Museum (free)
Grottoes from Northern Wei (471-499 AD), 150+ caves on 8 peaks. Giant Maitreya Buddha (20.6m, Ningxia's largest stone Buddha). Blends Chinese and Western artistic styles. Museum: Sassanian gilded silver ewer and glass bowl from Li Xian's tomb — Silk Road cultural exchange evidence.
Food: lamb meatball noodle soup (8-12 RMB), buckwheat noodles (5-8 RMB), lamb offal (8-12 RMB).
Day 2: Liupan Mountain Long March Site (50 RMB, full day)
2,928m — Red Army's last mountain on Long March. Mao wrote "Qingpingyue Liupanshan" here (1935). Long March Memorial, summit views of Loess Plateau, Xiaonanchuan forest stream valley, Liangdian Gorge (Genghis Khan's summer retreat). 1.5h from Guyuan. 10°C cooler than city in summer.
Day 3: Huoshizhai Danxia Park (60 RMB) → Departure
China's highest-altitude danxia landform — red sandstone formations on the Loess Plateau. Lovers' Valley, Yuntai Mountain. Red peak forest stark against yellow earth. 1h from Guyuan.
HSR: Yinchuan 2h, Xi'an 2.5h. Budget: 500-1000 economy, 1200-2000 comfortable.
