Hami 3-Day Guide: Silk Road Stronghold, City of Sweetness & Desert Grandeur
Hami, Xinjiang's eastern gateway, a key Silk Road stronghold. First thought: Hami melon — but this city offers far more. Balikun Grassland is Xinjiang's second-largest prairie, where Tianshan snow peaks meet emerald meadows; Hami Hui Prince Palace is Xinjiang's finest Islamic-style ancient complex,见证ing a century of Hui Prince history; Ghost City's Yardang formations are eerie and spectacular; Mingsha Mountain's singing sand phenomenon amazes. Hami is the first stop entering Xinjiang — and the most overlooked city worth slowing down for.
🚶 Day 1: Hui Prince Palace → Hami Museum → Huixiang Township
Morning: Hui Prince Palace (回王府) Xinjiang's best-preserved princely estate, built during Kangxi's reign (Qing Dynasty). Fusion of Han, Uyghur, and Mongolian architecture — flying eaves alongside domed archways, unique in China. Exhibits include Hui royal artifacts, traditional Uyghur clothing, and handicrafts. Tickets ¥40, about 1.5 hours.
Midday: Hami Cuisine Hami polo (¥20-35) braised with local carrots and lamb; Hami baked naan (¥3-5) — large, crispy, ideal travel food; lamb stewed with flatbread (¥30-50) — Hami specialty, tender lamb topped with thin flatbread soaking up rich broth. Try Jianguo South Road food street.
Afternoon: Hami Museum Free admission. Star exhibits include 3,200-year-old mummies (older than Loulan Beauty) and extensive Silk Road artifacts. Adjacent Hami Melon Garden for authentic Hami melons (¥5-15 each).
Evening: Huixiang Township Night Market Most vibrant Uyghur neighborhood. Whole roast sheep (¥40-60/jin), tandoor meat, yogurt zongzi (¥5-8), fresh melon juice (¥5-10).
🚶 Day 2: Balikun Grassland & Ancient City (Full Day)
Full Day: Balikun 2 hours from Hami (120km), crossing Tianshan Pass — from Gobi desert directly to lush alpine meadow. The contrast is stunning.
Highlights:
- Balikun Grassland: Xinjiang's second-largest at 1,600-2,100m. Summer wildflowers, grazing herds, Tianshan snow backdrop. Horse riding ¥50-100/hour
- Balikun Ancient City: Han-Tang military garrison. Preserved Qing walls, temples. Han-Manchu dual-city layout is nationally rare
- Balikun Lake: Alpine salt lake reflecting snow mountains — photographer's paradise
- Songfeng Academy: One of Qing-era Xinjiang's four great academies
Lunch in Balikun town: steamed flatbread (¥10-15) and mutton soup (¥20-30). Grassland free; some sites ¥10-20.
🚶 Day 3: Wubao Ghost City → Hami Melon Garden → Departure
Morning: Wubao Ghost City 90km from Hami, larger than Urho Ghost City with fewer tourists. Eerie Yardang formations — "Sea Turtle," "Two-Headed Horse," "Phoenix." Important pterosaur fossil site. Wild beauty without crowds. Free admission; charter car recommended.
Midday: Hami Tribute Melon Garden Imperial melon plantation since Qing Dynasty. Visit traditional fields and drying houses, taste authentic varieties (¥5-20). August-September peak season.
Afternoon: Departure via G30 expressway.
