Hotan (Hetian), ancient "Yutian," the brightest pearl on the Silk Road's southern route. China's "Jade Capital" — Hotan jade has warmed Chinese civilization for 5,000 years; home to carpets, silk, and the birthplace of Atlas silk. The southern edge of Taklamakan Desert lies just outside the city, the Hotan River rushes down from Kunlun Mountains, and the Millennium Walnut King Tree has stood for a thousand years. At Hotan's bazaars, experience the most authentic Western Regions atmosphere — Uyghur uncles haggling, naan bakers tossing dough, jade merchants appraising treasures, vibrant and unforgettable.
🚶 Day 1: Jade Culture → Tuancheng Old Street → Hotan Night Market
Morning: Hotan Jade Capital City China's largest Hotan jade trading market. Thousands of stalls with raw stones and finished pieces — seed jade, mountain jade, white jade, green jade. Even without buying, watching jade merchants negotiate is a unique experience. Adjacent jade museum is free.
Midday: Hotan kebabs (¥3-5/skewer) — arguably Xinjiang's best; samsa (¥3-5); rose jam naan (¥5-8) unique to Hotan.
Afternoon: Tuancheng Old Street Best-preserved Uyghur neighborhood. Yellow rammed-earth buildings with wood-carved windows and blue tile decorations. Visit carpet weaving workshops and Atlas silk shops (¥50-200/meter).
Evening: Hotan Night Market (Yuquan River) One of Xinjiang's most famous night markets. Roasted eggs (¥5-15) — whole eggs slow-roasted over charcoal with runny yolks; every kind of grilled meat; Hotan ice cream (¥5-10) made with fresh milk.
🚶 Day 2: Walnut King Tree → Grape Corridor → Desert Viewpoint
Morning: Millennium Walnut King A 1,000+ year-old walnut tree covering over one mu (667m²), producing 10,000+ walnuts annually. A living plant fossil. Tickets ¥15.
Midday: Thousand-Mile Grape Corridor Hotan people built grape arbors along hundreds of kilometers of roadsides — a Guinness World Record. Autumn brings grapes hanging overhead. Free.
Afternoon: Taklamakan Desert Viewpoint 30 minutes from Hotan, see the southern edge of China's largest desert. Golden sand dunes to the horizon. Camel rides (¥50-80), sandboarding. Free.
🚶 Day 3: Hotan Grand Bazaar → Malikaawati Ancient City → Departure
Morning: Hotan Grand Bazaar Fridays and Sundays are busiest. Thousands of Uyghur farmers arrive by donkey cart — livestock, carpets, jade stretching as far as the eye can see. Xinjiang's most authentic market.
Midday: Malikaawati Ancient City Han Dynasty ruins 25km from Hotan, an important Silk Road southern route city. Buddhist stupa and temple ruins. Free.
Afternoon: Fly to Ürümqi or Kashgar, or continue exploring via G315.
