Jiamusi 3-Day Guide: China's Easternmost Point, Where Three Rivers Meet
Schwarz
Jiamusi, China's easternmost city, is where the motherland greets its first ray of sunlight each day. Here, three great rivers converge — the Songhua, Heilongjiang (Amur), and Wusuli (Ussuri) — and Russia lies just across the water. It's the only place in China where you can witness the "three-colored river" spectacle. Hezhen fish-skin clothing, the Eastern Pole Pagoda on Heixiazi Island, and a frozen wonderland at -30°C — if you thought Dongbei (Northeast China) was just Harbin, Jiamusi will redefine this black-soil land for you.
🌤️ Best Time to Visit
Jiamusi has two golden travel windows: summer (June-August) and winter (December-February).
Summer (June-August, 15-28°C) is the most comfortable season: wheat waves roll across the Sanjiang Plain, migratory birds flock to the wetlands, and Heixiazi Island is fully open — you can cycle around the island and watch the sunset over the marshes. June also hosts the Sanjiang International Tourism Festival. However, mosquitoes are fierce — pack long sleeves and strong repellent.
Winter (December-February, -20 to -30°C) is a paradise for snow and ice lovers: the endless white Sanjiang Plain offers skiing and hunting, frozen pears and persimmons are the most authentic street snacks, and the spectacle of ice fishing is unforgettable. However, some areas of Heixiazi Island close, and you must prepare thoroughly for extreme cold.
Spring and autumn (April-May, September-October) are shoulder seasons with fewer tourists and cheaper hotels — ideal for off-peak travel. May offers the dramatic spectacle of the Songhua River ice breaking up.

💡 Practical Tips
-
Where to stay: In Jiamusi city, the Ramada Hotel (from ¥300) or Yunding Boutique Hotel (river-view rooms ¥200). In Fuyuan, the Heixiazi Island themed hotel (from ¥400 with breakfast) or backpacker hostels (beds from ¥50).
-
Border permit: Mandatory for Heixiazi Island! Obtain free from any police station in Jiamusi or Fuyuan — just bring your ID, 10 minutes.
-
Extreme cold preparation (winter): -30°C is no joke! Essential gear: down jacket, non-slip snow boots, gloves, hat, scarf, and heat packs. Phone batteries drain extremely fast in the cold — carry a power bank and keep it warm close to your body.
-
Summer mosquito defense: The Sanjiang Plain wetlands breed fierce mosquitoes. Long sleeves and pants are mandatory, plus strong repellent — especially for Heixiazi Island and wetland parks.
-
Hezhen cultural experiences: The Eight-Bowl Feast requires booking one day in advance. Fish-skin paintings and birch bark crafts make unique souvenirs — bargain to about 50% off at the culture village.
-
Transport notes: Fuyuan is ~3 hours from Jiamusi by train — book tickets early. A hired car for Fuyuan + Heixiazi Island costs ~¥400-500/day, best split among a group.
-
Best photo spots: Dongji Pavilion sunrise (a life-defining photo), Sanjiangkou river confluence (drone shot paradise), Heixiazi Island Eastern Pole Pagoda, Riverside Park sunset.
