Jieyang 3-Day Guide: Jade Capital of Asia, Chaoshan's Hidden Gem
Jieyang is home to Asia's largest jade market — Yangmei Jade City trades over ¥20 billion annually, with nearly every household involved in jade craftsmanship. Jieyang's Confucian Temple is Lingnan's largest, older and grander than Chaozhou's. Puning is "China's Plum Capital" with 100,000 mu of plum blossoms blooming like snow in winter. Though the quietest of the three Chaoshan cities, Jieyang is the most rewarding to discover.
🚶 Day 1: Jieyang Ancient City (Lingnan's Largest Confucian Temple)
Morning: Ancient City Core
- Jinxian Gate (free): Jieyang's iconic Ming Dynasty gate tower, built in 1621. Three-tiered flying eaves, the symbol of ancient Jieyang. "Jinxian" means "attracting talented scholars"
- Jieyang Confucian Temple (free): Lingnan's largest Confucian temple, founded in 1140 (Southern Song). At 5,526 sqm, it surpasses Chaozhou's temple in both age and scale. Lingxing Gate, semi-circular pool, and Dacheng Hall are all preserved. Zhou Enlai once worked here during the Revolutionary era
- Jieyang City God Temple (free): The best-preserved Chenghuang Temple in the Chaoshan region. Ming Dynasty architecture with exquisite inlaid porcelain (嵌瓷) on the roof — a hallmark of Chaoshan architectural art. Locals come frequently to pray for blessings
Afternoon: Rong River Banks
- Rong River (free): Jieyang's mother river. The greenway along both banks is perfect for cycling and walking — about 10km total
- Jieyang Tower (free): A Han Dynasty-style landmark, 38 meters tall with a grand plaza — the symbol of new Jieyang
- West Lake Park (free): A city park built in 1958, pleasant for a leisurely stroll
Dinner
- Puning Tofu (¥10): Crispy on the outside, silky on the inside, dipped in chive salt water — the most authentic way to eat it. Puning tofu uses mountain spring water for an extra-bouncy texture
- Pingpong Cake (¥5): Jieyang's exclusive dessert — glutinous rice flour + peanuts + sesame + sugar, steamed until soft and sweet. Named for the "ping-pong" sound during preparation
- Jieyang Kway Teow (¥12): Chaozhou rice noodles in soup with braised meats and vegetables
🚶 Day 2: Yangmei Jade City (Asia's Largest Jade Market)
Full Day: Yangmei Jade City
- Yangmei Jade City (free to visit): Asia's largest jade trading hub, known as "China's Jade Capital." Nearly every household in Yangmei Village works in jade, with annual turnover exceeding ¥20 billion. Over 3,000 jade shops and 100,000+ workers
- Complete Jade Production Process: Watch the full journey from raw stone cutting → design → carving → polishing → finished product. An unremarkable jade boulder, after weeks of a master craftsman's work, can become a artwork worth hundreds of thousands
- Jade Wholesale Market: Thousands of shops selling everything from ¥50 bangles to ¥1,000,000 premium jadeite. Warning: Don't buy expensive pieces unless you understand jade. Buy small souvenirs. Always ask for "A-grade" (natural, untreated) jade — B and C grades are acid-washed and dyed
- Qiaonan Jade Market: Another large market, sometimes better prices than Yangmei
- China Jade Capital Plaza: Large exhibition and trading center
Dinner
- Puning Bean Paste Baked Chicken (¥58): Chicken baked with Puning's famous fermented bean paste — rich, savory, aromatic
- Lei Cha (¥15): A Hakka specialty — tea leaves, peanuts, and sesame ground with a wooden pestle in a ceramic bowl, mixed with hot water, then served with rice and various side dishes. Popular in Jieyang's southern Hakka areas
- Longjiang Pig Trotter Rice (¥20): From Longjiang Town in Jieyang's Huilai County — braised pig trotters over rice, rich in collagen
🚶 Day 3: Puning Ancient Town + Departure
Morning: Puning
- De'an Li (free): The mansion of Qing Dynasty naval commander Fang Yao, covering 40,000 sqm — one of Guangdong's largest private estates. Built in 1868, it contains 773 rooms divided into "Old Fort" and "New Fort" sections
- Puning Plum Blossoms (Jan-Feb): Puning is "China's Plum Capital" with over 100,000 mu of plum trees. When blossoms open in January-February, the mountains turn white like snow — Guangdong's most beautiful plum viewing. Plum products: plum wine ¥30, preserved plum ¥15, sour plum drink ¥5
- Puning International Clothing City: A major South China wholesale clothing market for bargain shopping
Departure
- HSR: Chaoshan Station → Shenzhen North (3h, ¥180) → Guangzhou South (3.5h, ¥220)
