Karamay 3-Day Guide: Wind Songs of Ghost City & Miracles of Oil Town
Karamay, the "Oil City," born from petroleum. In Uyghur, "Karamay" means "black oil" — named after the Black Oil Hill in the city center where crude naturally seeps to the surface. This city is the cradle of China's petroleum industry and an unmissable stop on the Northern Xinjiang circuit. Urho Ghost City (World Ghost City) is one of the planet's most spectacular Yardang landforms, where wind howls through formations like demons wailing; Dushanzi Grand Canyon is called "Xinjiang's Colorado"; the Karamay River transforms Gobi wasteland into an oasis. Add Karamay's legendary barbecue, laghman, and polo — this hardcore industrial city has surprising travel appeal.
🚶 Day 1: Black Oil Hill → Karamay Well No.1 → Karamay River Night View
Morning: Black Oil Hill Park The origin of Karamay's name — a natural asphalt mound where crude oil seeps from underground, forming black oil bubbles and pools. Watch black crude bubbling up from the ground. Features oil bubble sculptures and petroleum worker monuments. Free admission, about 1 hour.
Midday: Karamay Dining Karamay's barbecue is top-tier in Northern Xinjiang. Must-eats: Roasted lamb ribs (¥15-25), crispy outside tender inside; tandoor meat (¥20-30); oil-sautéed meat laghman (¥15-25) — upgraded Xinjiang hand-pulled noodles with stir-fried lamb and peppers. Try Youyi Road Food Street.
Afternoon: Karamay Well No.1 The discovery well of New China's first major oilfield, striking oil in 1955, marking the birth of the Karamay oilfield. The wellhead is preserved; the exhibition hall tells the legendary story of Karamay from wasteland to oil city. Free admission.
Evening: Karamay River Night View An artificial channel diverting Irtysh River water through the city. At night, illuminated banks with fountains, music, and strolling residents — an unexpected Jiangnan water-town feel in the Gobi. Free.
🚶 Day 2: Urho Ghost City (Full Day)
Full Day: World Ghost City (Urho) One of China's most spectacular Yardang landforms, ranked #1 "Most Beautiful Yardang in China" by Chinese National Geography. - Observation Platform: Panoramic views of the entire Yardang group; sunset is most spectacular
- Photography: 5-8pm is golden hour — low-angle sunlight makes formations dramatically three-dimensional
