Liupanshui 3-Day Guide: China's Cool City — 19°C Summers & the Wumeng Grasslands
Liupanshui, an industrial city in western Guizhou, was christened "China's Cool City" by the Chinese Meteorological Society thanks to its average annual temperature of 19°C. It's the only city in China named after its climate — while the rest of the country swelters in summer, Liupanshui stays refreshingly cool. The Wumeng Great Grassland is the largest alpine meadow in southern China, dotted with cattle and sheep under skies filled with azalea blooms. Tuole Village shelters the world's densest ancient ginkgo forest — a golden fairy tale each autumn. Meihua Mountain boasts the world's longest single-path mountain cableway, with cloud seas, snowscapes, and sunrises. Liupanshui's lamb noodles, iron-pan grilling (luoguo), and kiwifruit are hidden culinary treasures.
🚶 Day 1: Shuicheng Ancient Town → Fengchi Park → Zhongshan Food Street
Morning: Shuicheng Ancient Town Liupanshui's historical root, dating to the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty. Built along the water with well-preserved stone-paved lanes, old buildings house luoguo grilling shops and lamb noodle restaurants. Not over-commercialized — full of authentic local life. Free admission, 1-2 hours.
Midday: Shuicheng Lamb Noodles (水城羊肉粉) Visiting Liupanshui without eating lamb noodles means you haven't really been here! Shuicheng lamb noodles are one of Guizhou's "Big Three" (alongside Zunyi and Xingyi). The broth is simmered from black goat bones, topped with fresh lamb slices, Sichuan peppercorn, cilantro, and chili oil — rich, spicy, and aromatic. Try "Chang Hui Tou" or "Xiang Jia," ¥12-20/person. Add a portion of lamb intestine (¥5) for extra indulgence.
Afternoon: Fengchi Park An urban lake park in downtown Liupanshui. A central island with pavilions and pagodas. Summer brings lotus blooms; winter attracts migratory birds. The 2km lakeside path is locals' favorite for walking and exercise. Free admission.
Evening: Zhongshan District Luoguo Street Liupanshui's most authentic nighttime food — Shuicheng Luoguo (铁锅烙). A flat iron pan sizzles with potatoes, tofu, pork belly, beef, chives, and onions, all pan-fried and dipped in chili powder. Try "Lao Cheng Luoguo" or "Zhou Ji Luoguo," ¥30-50/person. Beer + luoguo = the perfect Cool City summer night.
🚶 Day 2: Wumeng Great Grassland (Full Day)
Full Day: Wumeng Great Grassland (乌蒙大草原) Located in Pingdi Yi Ethnic Township, Panzhou City. Altitude 2,500-2,800m, one of the largest and highest alpine meadows in southwest China. Called the "Eastern Alps" — rolling green hills dotted with cattle and sheep, backed by the endless Wumeng Mountain range. Summer (June-August) is peak season with azalea seas, alpine meadows, and stunning cloud-sea sunrises.
Key attractions:
- Longhaizi (长海子): Alpine lake with crystal-blue water reflecting sky and clouds
- Azalea Flower Sea: Every May-July, thousands of acres of wild azaleas blanket the hillsides in red, pink, and purple
- Observation Platform: 360° panoramic views of grassland and distant mountains; sunrise and sunset are magical
Transport: 2.5 hours by car from downtown Liupanshui (120km), good road conditions. Or take a bus from Liupanshui station to Panzhou, then transfer to the scenic area. Tickets ¥30. On-site accommodations include wooden cabins, yurts, and RV camps. Bring your own snacks and water.
Evening: Panzhou Ancient City If staying in Panzhou, explore the old city night market. Panzhou Ham (one of China's "Three Great Hams") is a must-buy souvenir, ¥40-80/jin.
🚶 Day 3: Tuole Ancient Ginkgo Village → Yuelianghe Yelang Buyi Cultural Park
Morning: Tuole Ancient Ginkgo Village (妥乐古银杏村) The village with the world's highest density of ancient ginkgo trees — 1,450 specimens, hundreds over 300 years old, the oldest reaching 1,500 years. In autumn (October-November), golden leaves carpet the stone paths and streams — a living fairy tale. Even outside ginkgo season, the ancient trees, babbling brooks, and pastoral scenery are deeply soothing. Tickets ¥30, about 1 hour by car from Panzhou.
Afternoon: Yuelianghe Yelang Buyi Cultural Park An excellent place to experience Buyi ethnic culture. The Buyi people are Liupanshui's main ethnic minority. Traditional stilt houses, batik workshops, and bronze drum performances. Try your hand at batik-making (¥30-50 experience fee) and taste five-color sticky rice (¥15-20). Free park entry; activities cost extra.
Evening: Return to Liupanshui For your final meal, try Shuicheng kiwifruit (¥8-15/jin, emerald-green flesh, sweet and tart, Vitamin C champion) and bitter buckwheat tea.
