Shanwei 3-Day Guide: Eastern Guangdong Coast, Revolutionary Sacred Land
Red Bay Zhelang Peninsula has a nationally unique dual-wave spectacle — the peninsula splits the sea in two, with crashing waves on the east side perfect for surfing and calm waters on the west side perfect for swimming. Haifeng is the birthplace of China's first Soviet regime (1927). Jinxiang Beach is a pristine undeveloped beach. Shanwei's seafood is among the cheapest in Guangdong, and Lei Cha is the locals' soul food.
🚶 Day 1: Red Bay Zhelang Peninsula (Dual-Wave Spectacle)
Full Day: Red Bay
- Red Bay Zhelang Peninsula (free): A nationally unique dual-wave spectacle — the peninsula splits the sea in two like a knife. The east side faces the Pacific with constant pounding waves, a national water sports training base that has hosted multiple National Games windsurfing competitions, perfect for surfing and wave watching; the west side is sheltered by the peninsula, calm as a lake, perfect for swimming and water activities. Zhelang Lighthouse stands at the peninsula's end, the best viewing point
- Lighthouse Island (ferry ¥20): Lighthouse Island at the peninsula's end, surrounded by sea on three sides, 360° unobstructed ocean views. Lighthouse first built during the Qing Guangxu era, an important navigation marker on the South China Sea route. Dramatic rocky formations, spectacular for photography
- Zhelang Spectacle: Standing at the lighthouse you can simultaneously see two completely different sea states, white-capped rollers on one side and mirror-calm water on the other, geologically very rare. This phenomenon occurs because the peninsula's location恰好 blocks waves from different directions
- Water Sports: Surfboard ¥80/hr, windsurfing ¥100, jet ski ¥60. Red Bay is Guangdong's famous surfing destination with annual competitions
- Seafood ¥60-100/person: Boiled prawns ¥20/jin, cream crabs ¥35/jin, grilled oysters ¥3/each, grouper ¥40/jin, mantis shrimp ¥30/jin
Dinner & Accommodation
- Seafood stalls in Zhelang Town — catch cooked to order
- Accommodation: Zhelang Town guesthouses ¥150-300/night, Red Bay resort hotels ¥400-600/night
🚶 Day 2: Xuanwu Mountain + Haifeng Revolutionary Heritage
Morning: Xuanwu Mountain (¥15)
- Eastern Guangdong's Buddhist sacred site. Yuanshan Temple has 800 years of history, first built in the first year of Jianyan in the Southern Song (1127). Temple preserves Song Dynasty bronze bell, Ming Dynasty woodcarvings and other precious artifacts. Fuxing Tower (Ming Dynasty pagoda) behind the temple offers panoramic views of Jieshi Bay
Afternoon: Haifeng Revolutionary Sites
- Red Palace & Red Square (free): In November 1927, Peng Pai established China's first Soviet government here — the Hailufeng Soviet. The Red Palace was originally a Ming Dynasty Confucian school (Confucian temple); Peng Pai renamed it. The Red Square was where mass rallies of 10,000+ people gathered. A bronze statue of Peng Pai stands in the center. This was the first achievement of China's agrarian revolution
- Peng Pai's Former Residence (free): China's peasant movement pioneer Peng Pai's former residence. Peng Pai was born into Haifeng's largest landlord family but famously sold his land to distribute to peasants, leading the Hailufeng peasant movement. The residence is a two-story Western-style building preserving Peng Pai's study and bedroom
- Haifeng Old Town: Preserves some Republican-era buildings, arcade streets have character
Dinner
- Shanwei Lei Cha (¥15): Shanwei people's soul food — tea leaves, peanuts, and sesame ground with a wooden pestle in a grinding bowl into powder, mixed with boiling water, added with rice and various side dishes (green beans, mustard greens, dried shrimp, crushed peanuts). One bowl of Lei Cha is one complete meal, nutritionally balanced
- Cai Cha (¥10): A variation of Lei Cha, without rice but with various vegetables and stir-fried toppings, more refreshing
- Beef Patties (¥5): Shanwei street snack, minced beef pressed into patties and pan-fried golden
🚶 Day 3: Jinxiang Beach + Fengshan Ancestral Temple + Departure
Morning: Jinxiang Beach
- Jinxiang Beach (free): Pristine beach, fine powdery sand, crystal clear water, very few tourists. One of Shanwei's most beautiful beaches, and one of Guangdong's few undeveloped beaches. Guanyin Ridge beside the beach offers panoramic bay views
- Zhou Enlai Sea Crossing Memorial (free): After the Nanchang Uprising failed in 1927, Zhou Enlai crossed the sea here by boat to Hong Kong. A stone monument on the beach records this revolutionary history
Afternoon: Shanwei City + Departure
- Fengshan Ancestral Temple (free): Shanwei's most famous Mazu (sea goddess) temple, first built in the 9th year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty (1636). A large stone Mazu statue crowns the hilltop
- High-speed rail: Shanwei → Shenzhen North (1h, ¥70) → Guangzhou South (1.5h, ¥100)
- Self-driving: Shenzhen → Shanwei about 150km (2 hours), Guangzhou → Shanwei about 250km (3 hours)
