Weifang 3-Day Guide: World Kite Capital, Chaotian Pot & Yangjiabu Heritage
Schwarz
Weifang, the World Kite Capital, is a city that treats the sky as its canvas. Every April, kite enthusiasts from around the globe converge here as tens of thousands of kites fill the heavens — but if you think Weifang is just about kites, you'd be seriously mistaken. The Jiangnan-garden elegance of Shihuyuan, Yangjiabu's 600-year woodblock printing heritage, Qingzhou Ancient City's 5,000-year civilization, Chaotian Pot and baked meat pies brimming with local soul… Three days in this underrated Shandong gem will redefine your idea of "fun."
🌤️ Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Weifang is spring (April-May), especially the third week of April — when the annual Weifang International Kite Festival takes over. Kite teams from over 60 countries stage an aerial spectacle at the Binhai flying ground that will leave your jaw on the floor. Temperatures are a pleasant 10-22°C.
Autumn (September-October) is another excellent season: crisp, clear skies, Qingzhou Ancient City's bluestone streets gleaming under golden light, and Yi Mountain's slopes ablaze with autumn foliage. Temperatures of 15-25°C are perfect for hiking and old-town wandering.
Summer (June-August) is hot (28-35°C), but Fuhua Amusement Park and Binhai Beach are great for family trips. Winter (November-March) is cold and dry, but Yangjiabu's Spring Festival folk experiences (New Year printmaking, kite crafting) offer a unique seasonal charm — plus the cheapest hotel rates of the year.

💡 Practical Tips
-
Kite Festival timing: The third week of April each year (dates vary slightly), main venue at Weifang Binhai Economic Development Zone flying ground. Book hotels at least 1 month in advance! The entire city sells out and prices spike during the festival.
-
Where to stay: Near Shihuyuan/Train Station area (¥200-400/night) for best transport access. During Kite Festival, consider slightly outlying areas like Hi-Tech Zone (¥300-500/night). Qingzhou Ancient City has character B&Bs (¥250-400/night).
-
Kite buying guide: For souvenirs, go for miniature craft kites — easy to carry and beautiful (¥30-80). Serious large sport kites aren't recommended for beginners. Yangjiabu kites are cheaper and more authentic than museum shop ones.
-
Qingzhou day trip tips: Qingzhou Ancient City is large — focus on Zhaode Ancient Street and Ou Garden. There are countless little alleys; wandering into any of them brings surprises.
-
Ultimate food route: Morning: baked meat pie. Noon: Chaotian Pot. Evening: Gaomi oven buns. That's the most authentic Weifang food day.
-
Non-festival highlights: If you're not visiting in April, Weifang still delivers! Autumn brings Qingzhou's red leaves, winter offers Yangjiabu folk experiences, and summer means beach time at Binhai. Every season has its charm.
-
Nearby combos: Weifang is 1 hour from Qingdao by high-speed rail, 1.5 hours from Jinan, and just 20 minutes from Zibo (the BBQ capital) by train — Shandong city-hopping is super easy!
Budget reference (per person, excluding transport to Weifang):
- Budget: ¥500-700 (budget hotel + street food + bus + train)
- Comfort: ¥1,000-1,500 (business hotel + all tickets + workshops + taxis)
- During Kite Festival: budget double to be safe, especially book accommodation early!
