Xiaogan 3-Day Guide: Dong Yong's Hometown — A City of Filial Piety, Poetry & Hot Springs
Xiaogan (孝感), located in north-central Hubei Province just 50 km from Wuhan, is the only prefecture-level city in China named after "xiao" (filial piety). This is the birthplace of the legendary tale of Dong Yong, who sold himself into servitude to pay for his father's funeral — a story that moved the heavens and won him the love of the Seventh Fairy. It is also where the great Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai spent ten years in self-imposed "wine exile" (酒隐安陆). With its deep cultural roots, stunning natural landscapes, therapeutic hot springs, and distinctive cuisine, Xiaogan is a seriously underrated gem waiting to be discovered.
🚶 Day 1: Filial Piety Heritage & Hot Spring Therapy
Morning: Dong Yong Park → Xiaogan Museum
Begin your journey at Dong Yong Park (董永公园), the spiritual heartland of China's filial piety culture. This free-entry park recreates the legendary tale of Dong Yong and the Seventh Fairy through classical architecture, sculptures, and lush gardens. The 400-year-old ginkgo tree known as the "Scholar Tree" (槐荫树) is said to be where the couple made their fateful vow. Inside Dong Yong Shrine, exquisitely carved Ming Dynasty wood panels vividly depict scenes of the Seventh Fairy weaving brocade and Dong Yong tilling the fields. Plan 1-2 hours here.
Right at the park entrance, the century-old rice wine shop serves the city's signature Xiaogan Rice Wine (桂花米酒, ¥8/bowl) — a sweet, mildly fermented drink that perfectly complements a piece of Xiaogan Sesame Candy (麻糖, ¥5/piece). This is the breakfast of Xiaogan locals.
A 10-minute walk takes you to the Xiaogan Museum (free, reservation required). The museum's star exhibit is the "Yun Gong Bell" inscribed with Spring and Autumn period war chronicles. The interactive zone lets you try your hand at Qin Dynasty bamboo slip rubbing. On Saturday mornings, catch a free Chu Opera performance of "The Heavenly Match" (天仙配) — the very story of Dong Yong and the Seventh Fairy. Allow 1.5 hours.
Afternoon: Tangchi Hot Spring
After lunch, head to Tangchi Hot Spring (汤池温泉) in Yingcheng City's Tangchi Town (40-minute drive from downtown). This 4A national scenic area is one of China's premier hot spring destinations, with spring water naturally heated to 72°C-79°C and rich in therapeutic minerals. The complex features 88 distinct pools across six themed zones: Japanese-Style, Dynamic Springs, Celebrity Culture, Herbal Wellness, Lovers' Springs, and Japanese Wooden Houses.
Highlights include the traditional Chinese medicine pools (Peach Blossom Pool, Blood-Nourishing Spring, Heat-Clearing Spring), beauty-enhancing pools, a water park with a drifting river, and a children's splash zone. Admission: ¥128/person | Open 09:00-23:00. Soak for 3-4 hours, remembering to take a 5-minute break every 20 minutes.
