Xinzhou 3-Day City Walk Guide
Xinzhou, anciently known as Xiurong, Shanxi's most underrated city. Lonely Planet calls Mount Wutai "the foremost of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains" — bodhimanda of Manjushri Bodhisattva, where blue and yellow temples coexist, and Foguang East Hall is "China's First National Treasure" (Liang Sicheng's words). Yanmen Pass is "the First Pass of China," with 3,000 years of military history. The Ten-Thousand-Year Ice Cave remains frozen below zero in midsummer. Xinzhou Ancient City has 1,800 years of vibrant street life with unbelievably affordable snacks.
