Yunfu 3-Day Guide: Stone Capital, Zen Patriarch's Birthplace
Yunfu is China's Stone Capital, ranking first nationwide in granite and marble production. Panlong Cave has a world-rare gemstone flower karst cave — calcite crystals blooming like flowers, found in only a few locations globally. Guoen Temple is where Zen Patriarch Huineng (638-713) was born and passed away, "Bodhi has no tree, the mirror has no stand" originated from his words. Yunfu is Guangdong's youngest prefecture-level city, low-key but deeply cultured.
🚶 Day 1: Panlong Cave (World-Rare Gemstone Flower Cave)
Morning: Panlong Cave
- Panlong Cave (¥50, including guided tour): One of the world's three great stone flower caves. Inside are countless white jade-like gemstone flowers (calcite crystal formations) blooming in diverse shapes — some like chrysanthemums, some like coral, some like Christmas flowers. Under colored lights they appear crystal-clear, as if walking through an underground crystal garden. Such gemstone flower caves exist in only a few locations worldwide (in China only Panlong and Guizhou's Zhijin Cave), an extraordinarily rare geological wonder
- Total length 1,200 meters, 3 levels to tour, about 1.5 hours
- Highlights: Gemstone Flower Corridor (densest cluster with dozens of crystal flowers), Dragon Mother Hall (massive stalagmite like a seated queen), Dragon King Pillar (10m stone column), Sea-Calming Needle (slender stalactite reaching the floor)
- Underground river boat ride (¥20)
Afternoon: Stone Expo Center
- Yunfu Stone Expo Center (free to visit): Yunfu is China's Stone Capital, ranking first in granite and marble production nationwide, stone industry annual output exceeding 50 billion yuan. You can watch the complete process: raw blocks → cutting → polishing → carving → finished products. Hundreds of stone varieties from China and dozens of importing countries
Dinner
- Xinxing Rice Noodles (¥10): Yunfu specialty, thin as cicada wings, translucent when cooked, pork bone broth
- Chadong Tofu (¥12): Mountain spring water tofu from Chadong Town, tender and sweet
- Luoding Fish Curd (¥15): Luoding specialty — dace fish paste deep-fried into golden spheres, crinkled like gauze, bouncy texture
🚶 Day 2: Guoen Temple (Zen Sacred Site)
Full Day: Guoen Temple + Six Ancestor's Homeland
- Guoen Temple (free): Zen Patriarch Huineng's (638-713) birthplace and passing place, first built in the first year of Hongdao in the Tang Dynasty (683). Huineng is one of the most influential figures in Chinese Buddhist history, "Bodhi has no tree, the mirror has no stand, originally there is nothing, where could dust gather" this verse originated from him, establishing the theoretical foundation of Southern Zen. Guoen Temple, Shaoguan's Nanhua Temple, and Guangzhou's Guangxiao Temple are together called Zen's Three Great Ancestral Temples
- Mahavira Hall: Enshrining Sakyamuni Buddha, ancient trees tower in front
- Six Ancestor Hall: Enshrining Patriarch Huineng's physical body (mummified) — uncorrupted for 1,300+ years
- Huineng's Hand-Planted Lychee Tree: Planted by Huineng himself, over 1,300 years old, still producing fruit every summer! The lychees are called "Buddha Lychees," considered sacred by devotees. One of China's oldest lychee trees
- Gratitude Pagoda: Tang Dynasty 7-story brick pagoda, standing firm after a millennium
Afternoon: Six Ancestor's Homeland
- Six Ancestor's Birth Village (free): Xialu Village where Huineng was born, preserving remnants of his childhood — ancient well, stone mill, old walls
- Hidden Buddha Valley (free): Where disciples allegedly hid Huineng's relics after his passing. Bamboo-shrouded valley with waterfall and clear pools
- Longshan Hot Springs (¥128): Natural sulfur springs near the temple
Dinner
- Six Ancestor Vegetarian (¥35): Temple cuisine using mountain vegetables and tofu
🚶 Day 3: Dawan Ancient Buildings + Tianlu Mountain + Departure
Morning: Dawan Ancient Buildings
- Dawan Ancient Buildings (free): Provincial cultural heritage site, preserving dozens of Ming-Qing ancestral halls, residences, and ancient bridges. Li Clan Grand Hall is the most spectacular — three-courtyard layout, carved beams and painted rafters
Afternoon: Tianlu Mountain (optional)
- Tianlu Mountain (free): Elevation 1,251m, "Western Guangdong's #1 Mountain." Large meadows at the summit, azaleas bloom in spring. Hike 3-4 hours or take cable car
