Yushu 3-Day Guide: Source of Three Rivers, the Brilliant Pearl of Khampa Culture
Yushu — pearl of southern Qinghai's high plateau. The Yangtze, Yellow, and Mekong rivers all surge from here — called "China's Water Tower." Heart of Khampa Tibetan culture — Khampa men known for valor, Khampa dress for splendor. Reborn after the 2010 earthquake. Princess Wencheng Temple witnesses 1,300 years of Han-Tibetan friendship. Gyanak Mani Stone City holds 2.5 billion mantra stones — the world's largest mani pile. Sanjiangyuan National Park is China's first national park. Three days at "the source of all rivers."
Day 1: Jiegu Town → Gyanak Mani Stone City → Earthquake Memorial
Morning: Jiegu Town (Free) Yushu's capital — 3,700m altitude, important stop on ancient Tang-Tibet Road.
Gyanak Mani Stone City (Free, Xinzhai Village) World's largest mani stone pile — 2.5+ billion stones carved with six-syllable mantras and Buddhist scriptures, forming a 300m × 80m × 4m stone city. First stone placed by Lama Gyanak in early 18th century; Tibetans have been adding stones for nearly 300 years. Devotees circumambulate clockwise, spinning prayer wheels, chanting. Stunning at sunset when golden light hits the stones. 10min from town.
Afternoon: Earthquake Memorial (Free) April 14, 2010 — 7.1 magnitude earthquake killed nearly 3,000. Memorial built on site, showing the devastation and inspiring rebuilding story. Memorial wall engraved with victims' names.
Food: Tibetan noodles (yak broth, ¥10-15), Tibetan dumplings (yak meat, ¥2-3), butter tea (¥5-8/pot), yak meat (¥40-60/jin), barley wine (¥10-20/pot).
Day 2: Princess Wencheng Temple → Batang Grassland
Morning: Princess Wencheng Temple (¥20, Beina Valley, 25km from town) Princess Wencheng passed here 1,300 years ago en route to Tibet — temple houses her stone statue, symbol of Han-Tibetan unity. Built under cliff face; 1,300-year-old stone Buddha carvings and Tibetan inscriptions on rock walls. Peaceful valley with flowing stream — Yushu's most sacred site.
Batang Grassland (Free) Yushu's most magnificent alpine meadow — 4,200m natural pasture. Summer (June-August) wildflowers bloom across grasslands, yak and sheep herds scattered, snow peaks in distance. 1h drive from town.
Day 3: Sanjiangyuan Monument → Departure
