Aksu, "White Water" in Uyghur — where Tianshan snowmelt feeds the Aksu River. Heart of the ancient Qiuchi (Kucha) Kingdom — first stop of Buddhism's eastward journey, where Kumarajiva translated sutras, and Qiuchi music and dance influenced all of Tang Dynasty. Tianshan Tomur Peak is World Natural Heritage; Wensu Grand Canyon is "King of Canyons"; Kuqa Mystery Canyon narrows to 1.2m with golden light beams from 100m above. Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves predate Dunhuang by a century. Aksu is Xinjiang's most culturally profound destination.
🚶 Day 1: Kuqa Prince Palace → Old Town → Qiuchi Museum
Morning: Kuqa Prince Palace — Qing-era palace, last prince lived here until 2014. Fusion of Uyghur and Han architecture. ¥55.
Midday: Kuqa giant naan (¥3-5) — 60cm diameter! Fresh from tandoor, crispy outside, soft inside. Samsa (¥3-5), laghman (¥12-20).
Afternoon: Qiuchi Museum (free) — Buddhist art, music and dance culture. Kuqa Grand Mosque — Xinjiang's 2nd largest. Colorful door alleys in old town perfect for photos.
Evening: Night market — kebabs (¥3-5), tandoor meat (¥15-25), pomegranate juice (¥8-12).
🚶 Day 2: Tianshan Mystery Grand Canyon → Kizil Caves
Morning: Red sandstone canyon 100m+ deep, narrowest point 1.2m. Light beams from above illuminate red walls like a magical maze. 10°C cooler inside. ¥40. 1.5hrs from Kuqa.
Afternoon: Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves — one of China's four great grottoes, predating Dunhuang by ~100 years. 236 caves, 10,000m² murals blending Indian, Greek, Persian, and Chinese styles. Cave 38 "Qiuchi Flying Apsaras" and Cave 8 "Diamond Jataka Stories" are masterpieces. ¥70, guide ¥50.
🚶 Day 3: Wensu Tomur Grand Canyon → Departure
China's "Colorado" — red-brown sandstone in layers of ochre, orange, gray, purple. Hero Valley (narrowest), Ten Thousand Buddha Wall (wind-carved formations). Drive-through possible with 4WD. ¥40 + shuttle ¥30. Best light 3-6pm. 1 hour from Aksu.
Departure: Aksu Wensu Airport or G3012 to Kashgar.
