Qamdo 3-Day Guide: Pearl of Eastern Tibet, Rawu Lake Blue Ice and Laigu Glacier
Qamdo — "Pearl of Eastern Tibet" where Hengduan Mountains meet Three Rivers (Jinsha, Lancang, Nu). Rawu Lake is "Eastern Tibet's Finest Lake" — turquoise glacial lake reflecting snow peaks, stunning blue ice in winter (December-February). Laigu Glacier is one of world's three major maritime glaciers — cascading from 6,200m peaks, ice tongue reaching 4,000m. Qambaling Monastery is Khampa's largest Gelug monastery. Karub Site is Tibet's only Neolithic settlement. Three days exploring 318 National Highway's most stunning eastern Tibet secrets.
Day 1: Qambaling Monastery → Karub Site
Morning: Qambaling Monastery (¥40, Qamdo City) Khampa's largest Gelug monastery — founded 1444, ~1,000 monks. Built on Qamdo's highest terrace, golden roofs gleaming. 9m Maitreya Buddha copper statue inside — one of Tibet's largest indoor Buddha images. Monk debates daily ~15:00-17:00.
Afternoon: Karub Site (¥20) Tibet's only Neolithic site — 4,000-5,000 years old, unearthed stone tools, pottery, bone artifacts. Proves prehistoric human settlement in eastern Tibet. Small museum on site. 20min from city.
Food: Tibetan noodles (yak broth, ¥10-15), Tibetan dumplings (yak, ¥2-3), butter tea (¥5-8/pot), yak meat (¥40-60/jin).
Day 2: Rawu Lake + Laigu Glacier (Full Day)
Rawu Lake (Free viewing) Eastern Tibet's most beautiful alpine lake — 22 km², 3,850m altitude. Glacier meltwater creates impossible turquoise-blue — gem-like on sunny days. Snow peaks and forests reflected. Winter (December-February): frozen blue ice rivaling Lake Baikal.
Laigu Glacier (¥190, includes shuttle) One of world's three major maritime glaciers — cascading from 6,206m Gangri Gabu peak, ice tongue reaching ~4,000m. Close-up views: massive ice walls, deep crevasses, blue ice caves. You can hear the glacier's deep cracking sounds — it's "alive." 6h drive from Qamdo on G318. Stay overnight in Baxoi County or Rawu Town.
Day 3: Nu River 72 Turns → Departure
Morning: Nu River 72 Turns (Free viewing) G318's most spectacular section — dropping from 4,658m Yela Mountain pass to 2,740m Nu River canyon in just 12km, nearly 2,000m elevation change. 72 Z-shaped switchbacks carved into mountainside — highway like a ribbon wrapped around the mountain. Breathtaking from viewpoint.
Departure: Qamdo Bangda Airport (Chengdu/Chongqing/Lhasa flights). Drive to Lhasa ~12h.
