Changzhi, in southeastern Shanxi at the foot of Taihang Mountain — anciently known as Shangdang. The famous Battle of Changping (260 BC) between Qin and Zhao took place nearby. Taihang Grand Canyon is one of China's most dramatic gorges. Three days of mountain scenery, ancient battlefields, and Shanxi culture.
🚶 Day 1: Taihang Grand Canyon (¥100)
Full Day: One of China's ten most beautiful canyons — 40km of towering cliffs, waterfalls, and emerald pools. Hiking trails through the gorge, glass walkway over the abyss. Allow 5-6 hours. Stay overnight at Linzhou (Henan side) or Huguan (Shanxi side).
Food: Changzhi knife-cut noodles (¥8-12), millet porridge (¥3-5), Shanxi vinegar dishes
🚶 Day 2: Zhangze Lake + Shangdang Gate
Morning: Zhangze Lake (Free) — Large reservoir with beautiful mountain reflections.
Afternoon: Shangdang Gate (¥20) — Ancient gate marking the entrance to the Shangdang Plateau. Chenghuang Temple and old city walk.
Evening: Try Changzhi's famous "Three Treasures": Sanhe Noodles, Sanhe Pot, and Sanhe Soup.
🚶 Day 3: Lucheng or Qinxian
Option A: Lucheng — Former residence of Emperor Yi, ancient architecture.
Option B: Qinxian — Redbuds Mountain (¥40), beautiful spring blossoms.
Evening: High-speed rail — Taiyuan 1.5 hours, Zhengzhou 2 hours.
