Chifeng 3-Day Guide: Cradle of Hongshan Culture, Symphony of Grassland and Sand Lake
Chifeng, known as "Ulanhad" in Mongolian (meaning "Red Peak"), takes its name from the ochre-red mountains northeast of the city. This is the birthplace of the Hongshan Culture and where China's "First Dragon" jade artifact was unearthed. More than that, it's a natural canvas where grasslands, deserts, stone forests, and lakes intertwine in breathtaking harmony. In just three days, you'll traverse desert oases, gallop across boundless prairies, and uncover glacial relics — a self-drive adventure beyond imagination.
🌤️ Best Season to Visit
June to September is Chifeng's golden travel season. Summer temperatures range from 25–30°C, the grasslands turn emerald green, and wildflowers carpet the landscape. This is the perfect window for grassland road trips and desert camping. Autumn (mid-September to mid-October) paints the birch forests of Ulan Butong in fiery gold — a paradise for photographers.
Winter (November to March) sees temperatures plunge below -20°C, blanketing the grasslands in snow. This season suits snowfield trekking and winter photography, but requires a 4WD off-road vehicle and professional cold-weather gear. Spring (April to May) brings strong winds and sandstorms — travel with caution.
