Dali 3-Day Guide: Wind, Flower, Snow, Moon — Poetic Living Between Cangshan and Erhai
Dali, Yunnan's most poetic city. "Xiaguan Wind, Shangguan Flower, Cangshan Snow, Erhai Moon" — these four words capture all of Dali's romance. Nineteen peaks of Cangshan form a continuous screen, Erhai Lake mirrors the sky in jade-green waters, and the white-walled, blue-tiled old city hides millennium-old Nanzhao heritage. Xizhou's golden rice paddies, Shuanglang's stunning lake-view inns, and the Three Pagodas reflecting in still water — Dali's postcard is eternal.
Day 1: Three Pagodas → Xizhou Ancient Town → Dali Old City
Morning: Chongsheng Temple & Three Pagodas (5A scenic area, 75 RMB) Dali's iconic landmark — three ancient pagodas built in the Tang Dynasty, the main tower standing 69.13m tall, surviving a thousand years of wind and earthquakes. The temple was the royal monastery of the Dali Kingdom; 9 kings became monks here. The pagodas reflected in Juying Pool is Dali's most classic photograph.
Lunch: Xizhou Ancient Town (free) Living fossil of Bai culture — Dali's finest collection of Bai minority architecture. "Three buildings and one screen wall, four courtyards and five sky-wells." Yan Family Compound (20 RMB) features exquisite wood carvings and painted decorations. Don't miss Xizhou Baba (5-8 RMB) — crispy baked flatbread in sweet (rose bean paste) or savory (green onion pork) flavors, best fresh from the oven. Bai Three-Course Tea ceremony: "First bitter, then sweet, then aftertaste."
Afternoon: Dali Old City (free) 1,200 years of history, chessboard street layout perfectly preserved. South Gate Tower, Renmin Road (most artsy street — indie bookstores, handicraft shops, folk music bars), Fuxing Road (main commercial street), Wuhua Tower (panoramic city views).
Evening: Old City nightlife Bars and cafes on Renmin Road and Foreigner Street come alive. Folk singers, hand-drum performances, specialty souvenir shops.
Food: Dali Claypot Fish (Erhai carp slow-simmered, 30-50 RMB), Roasted Rushan (Bai dairy product with rose jam, 5-8 RMB), Sour-Spicy Fish (papaya sour + chili, 25-40 RMB), Cold Chicken Rice Noodles (8-12 RMB).
Day 2: Cangshan Mountain → Erhai Ecological Corridor Cycling
Morning: Cangshan (Ximatan Cable Car 300 RMB round trip or Gantong 110 RMB) 19 peaks stretching 50km, highest at 4,122m. The Ximatan Cable Car takes you to 3,900m — the vertical landscape change from subtropical forest to alpine meadow is breathtaking. Ximatan (alpine glacial lake) at the summit is sapphire-blue amid clouds.
Afternoon: Erhai Ecological Corridor cycling (bike rental 20-40 RMB/day) Yunnan's second-largest freshwater lake at 256 sq km. The 46km ecological corridor is cycling/walking only. Start at Longkan Pier — Cangshan on your right, Erhai on your left, Bai villages dotting the farmland. The S-Curve is the most photogenic bend — road hugging the lakeshore, water reflecting sky and mountains.
Evening: Shuanglang Ancient Town The most beautiful town on Erhai's eastern shore — Yang Liping's Sun Palace and Moon Palace are here. Watch Erhai sunset from Shuanglang, the lake turning golden. Lake-view inns abound (200-800 RMB/night).
Day 3: Shuanglang → Nanzhao Wind and Love Island → Departure
Morning: Nanzhao Wind and Love Island (50 RMB with boat) Erhai's largest island with Nanzhao palace ruins and Bai culture plaza. 40-minute walk around the island, surrounded by water with Cangshan views.
Lunch: Bai Eight Great Bowls (40-60 RMB/person) Traditional Bai banquet — 8 dishes symbolizing auspiciousness.
Departure: High-speed rail to Kunming ~2 hours. Flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou.
