Diqing 3-Day Guide: Shangri-La, Meili Snow Mountain, Sun and Moon of the Heart
Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture — the real "Shangri-La." James Hilton's 1933 "Lost Horizon" depicted this earthly paradise. In 2001, Zhongdian was officially renamed "Shangri-La." Meili Snow Mountain's Kawagarbo (6,740m) is a sacred Tibetan Buddhist peak — the golden sunrise on snow peaks is every photographer's ultimate dream. Pudacuo National Park has pristine lakes and meadows. Songzanlin Monastery is Yunnan's largest Tibetan Buddhist temple.
Day 1: Songzanlin Monastery (90 RMB) → Dukezong Ancient City (free)
Songzanlin — "Little Potala Palace," Yunnan's largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery, founded 1679. Golden roofs, red walls, three main halls with exquisite murals.
Dukezong — "Moonlight City," best-preserved Tibetan ancient town. World's largest prayer wheel (21m tall) at Guishan Park — requires multiple people to turn. Tibetan-style bars and thangka galleries.
Food: Yak meat hotpot (60-100 RMB/person), butter tea (10-15 RMB/pot), tsampa (5-10 RMB), barley wine (10-20 RMB).
Day 2: Pudacuo National Park (100+60 RMB, full day)
China's first national park. 3,500-4,159m elevation. Shudu Lake (turquoise alpine lake with primeval forest boardwalk, 1 hour), Militing alpine meadow (flowers May-June), Luosong Village (traditional Tibetan village with free-roaming pigs). 4-5 hours.
Day 3: Meili Snow Mountain — Feilai Temple viewpoint (free, full day)
One of four sacred Tibetan mountains. Kawagarbo (6,740m) — nobody has ever summited (climbing banned since 2001). Golden Sunrise on Snow Peak — first sunlight turns the peaks from gold to rose-red, lasting ~20 minutes. Feilai Temple viewpoint is the best spot. 4h drive from Shangri-La. Stay at Feilai Temple guesthouse (100-300 RMB) for sunrise around 7am. Best visibility October-May.
Departure: Shangri-La Airport (Kunming 50min). Budget: 800-1500 economy, 2000-3500 comfortable.
