Ella City Walk Guide: The Train on Nine Arches Bridge and the Hiking Paradise of Cloud Trails
Ella is located in Sri Lanka's central highlands at 1,041 meters altitude, a small mountain village surrounded by tea plantations and cloud forests. This town, with just one main street, has become Sri Lanka's most popular backpacker destination in recent years. Ella's magic lies in its perfect combination of natural scenery and adventure — you can hike Little Adam's Peak for sunrise, trek through tea gardens to Ella Rock for panoramic valley views, wait on Nine Arches Bridge as a train emerges from a tunnel, or fly over canyons on a zipline.
Ella's climate is warmer than Nuwara Eliya (18-25°C) but still pleasantly cool. The main street stretches about 1 kilometer, lined with guesthouses, cafes, bars, and travel agencies — bustling by day, peaceful by night. The cafe culture here is unique in Sri Lanka — you can sip Ceylon tea while watching clouds roll through the valley through floor-to-ceiling windows.
Ella is also the terminus of the famous Kandy-Ella train route, considered one of the world's most scenic train journeys.
🚶 Day 1: Little Adam's Peak and Tea Garden Hikes
Little Adam's Peak Sunrise Hike
Little Adam's Peak stands at 1,141 meters, named for its resemblance to Adam's Peak. It's about a 45-minute walk from town center — an easy, pleasant tea garden hike.
Departing at 5:00 AM is ideal. Climbing along tea plantation trails, you reach the summit at sunrise. From the peak, 360-degree views of Ella Valley unfold — layered tea gardens, distant Ella Rock, and ever-churning cloud seas. As sunlight rises over the ridge, painting the clouds golden-red, the scene makes you forget all fatigue.

On the way down, visit the Ella Spice Garden to learn about Sri Lanka's main spices (cinnamon, clove, cardamom, vanilla, pepper) — their cultivation and processing. Free guided tours and spice tea tasting.
Afternoon: Nine Arches Bridge
Nine Arches Bridge is Ella's most iconic landmark. Built during British colonial times entirely from brick and cement (no steel), it spans a valley about 30 meters deep with nine elegant semi-circular arches forming a perfect arc.
Several trains cross daily. The best viewing experience is standing on the jungle path below the bridge, waiting for a train to emerge from the tunnel and cross the bridge — the roar of the engine echoing through the valley is spectacular.

🚶 Day 2: Ella Rock and Ravana Falls
Ella Rock Hike
Ella Rock rises to about 1,350 meters, the tallest peak around Ella. The hike starts along railway tracks (exercise caution; walk about 2 km before turning onto mountain trails), taking 4-5 hours round trip.
During the ascent, you pass through tea gardens, eucalyptus forests, and cloud forests, spotting various birds and butterflies. At the summit, the entire Ella Valley, southern plains, and even the distant Indian Ocean stretch before you. A flat rock platform at the top is perfect for picnicking.
Moderate difficulty; hiking boots recommended. Bring enough water and snacks. Start early to avoid midday heat.
Ravana Falls
Ravana Falls is about 6 kilometers south of Ella, approximately 25 meters high and 10 meters wide — the most spectacular waterfall in the Ella area. Named after the demon king Ravana from Sri Lankan mythology — legend says he hid the kidnapped Sita in caves nearby.
A viewing platform beside the falls offers close-up views. During rainy season, water volume is immense with mist everywhere; in dry season it's gentler, sometimes swimmable in the pool below.

🚶 Day 3: Zipline, Train, and Cafes
Flying Ravana Zipline
Flying Ravana Mega Zipline is Sri Lanka's longest and fastest zipline, about 550 meters long with speeds up to 60 km/h. Launch from one hilltop, soar over tea gardens and valleys, landing on the opposite hillside. About 1-2 minutes of pure adrenaline.

Train Journey
Board the train at Ella station toward the next stop (Nuwara Eliya or Badulla), experiencing this famous mountain railway. The train creeps along the mountainside, passing tea gardens, tunnels, and bridges with ever-changing valley views. Crossing Nine Arches Bridge from aboard offers a completely different perspective from below.
