Galviharaya (Gal Vihara) is located in Polonnaruwa, North Central Province, Sri Lanka's most spectacular Buddhist rock carving complex. Built by King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, four Buddha statues were carved from two massive granite boulders — seated, standing, and two reclining Buddhas, the largest about 14 meters long. These carvings represent the pinnacle of Sinhalese classical art and are Polonnaruwa's most awe-inspiring heritage.
