Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture — southern Gansu's Tibetan secret. Labrang Monastery has the world's longest prayer wheel corridor (3.5km, 2,000+ prayer wheels). Zhagana — "Stone Box" — stone peaks like castles surrounding four Tibetan villages. Sangke Grassland, Langmusi "Little Switzerland of the East." Called "Nine-Color Shambhala" — more accessible than Tibet, more Tibetan than Qinghai. Tibetan culture without altitude sickness.
Day 1: Labrang Monastery (40 RMB) → Sangke Grassland (free)
Labrang — one of six great Gelug monasteries, founded 1709. 3.5km prayer wheel corridor (world's longest), 6 colleges, up to 4,000 monks. Wensi College holds 3,000 monks. Gongtang Pagoda gleams gold.
Sangke Grassland — 3,000m alpine meadow, wildflowers July-August. Horse riding (30-50 RMB/hour), Tibetan tents (50-100 RMB). Food: Tibetan yak meat buns (3-5 RMB), hand-eaten lamb (30-50 RMB/jin), butter tea (5-10 RMB).
Day 2: Zhagana (85 RMB, full day)
"Stone Box" — stone peaks like knives surrounding four Tibetan villages. Xiannv Beach hike (1.5 hours for panoramic view), Dongwa Village (most primitive), sunrise sea of clouds, Xiannv Lake (emerald alpine lake). 4h from Xiahe. Stay overnight (80-200 RMB) for sunrise.
Day 3: Langmusi (30 RMB) → Departure
"Little Switzerland of the East" — White Dragon River splits the town: north bank Gansu, south bank Sichuan. Gold-roofed Seit Monastery on Gansu side, peaceful Gerdian Monastery on Sichuan side. Sky burial site on mountain (visit with respect). Red rock cliffs, canyon streams, mosques and Buddhist temples coexist.
Xiahe Airport (Xi'an, Chengdu). Bus to Lanzhou 4h. Budget: 600-1200 economy, 1500-2500 comfortable.
