Atomic City (Xihai Town) birthed China's first atomic and hydrogen bombs — Factory 221 hidden in grassland, once China's most secret place. Menyuan rapeseed flower sea (July) is one of "World's Top Ten Flower Seas" — miles of golden beneath Qilian Mountains. Qilian Mountain grassland rated one of "China's Six Most Beautiful Grasslands." Day 1: Qinghai Lake North Shore → Gold-Silver Grassland
Morning: Qinghai Lake North Shore (North shore free)
Qinghai Lake — China's largest inland saltwater lake, 4,500 km², 3,200m altitude. North shore far fewer tourists, more pristine.
Experiences: Lake cycling (rent bikes ¥50-80/day, north shore ~90km), lakeside strolls (water impossibly blue — deep blue, light blue, emerald on sunny days), pass by Sun-Moon Mountain (Princess Wencheng route, ¥40).
Afternoon: Gold-Silver Grassland (Free, Haiyan County) "In that distant place, there is a good girl" — Wang Luobin composed this enduring song while collecting folk music here in 1939. Grassland named for golden and silvery-white summer wildflowers. Expansive meadows with Qilian snow peaks beyond. Wang Luobin Cultural Memorial Hall (¥20) on site.
Day 2: Atomic City (Xihai Town) — Full Day
Full Day: Atomic City Memorial + Factory 221 Site
Xihai Town — codename "Base 221," birthplace of China's first atomic bomb (1964) and hydrogen bomb (1967). At peak, 30,000+ scientists and workers secretly labored here, externally called "State Comprehensive Machinery Factory." Declassified 1995.
Highlights: Atomic City Memorial (free, detailed "Two Bombs" development — from scientists' manuscripts to nuclear test footage), Factory 221 site (partially open: underground command center, research buildings, detonation test field — 9m below grassland), Memorial Monument: "China's First Nuclear Weapons Research Base."
Memorial needs ~3 hours. Exhibition deeply moving — scientists at 3,200m altitude calculating nuclear fission formulas on abacuses in an era of scarcity.
Day 3: Menyuan Rapeseed Flower Sea → Qilian Grassland → Departure
Morning: Menyuan Hundred-Mile Rapeseed Flower Sea (July best, ¥60) One of "World's Top Ten Flower Seas" — every July, 600,000 mu of rapeseed bloom simultaneously, golden sea stretching from Qilian Mountains to the horizon for nearly 100km. Blue sky, white clouds, snow peaks, yellow flowers — incredibly rich colors. Best viewpoints: Yuanshan Flower Viewing Platform, Fenfang Bath Scenic Area. Note: flowers only mid-July to early August.
Qilian Grassland (en route) Menyuan to Xining passes Qilian Mountains — "China's Six Most Beautiful Grasslands." Flocks and herds, snow peaks in distance.
Departure: Menyuan to Xining ~2.5h drive. Xining Caojiapu Airport nationwide flights.
