Haixi 3-Day Guide: Mirror of the Sky and Mars Camp, Qaidam's Fantasy Journey
Haixi Mongolian-Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture — over half of Qinghai's area, "China's most alien landscape." Chaka Salt Lake is the "Mirror of the Sky" — lake surface perfectly reflecting sky and clouds, rated one of "55 Places You Must Visit in Your Lifetime." Dachaidan Emerald Lake — pools of jade green in the Gobi. Water Yadan is the "world's only water devil city" — wind-eroded formations standing in turquoise lakes. Route 315 U-shaped highway is "China's Loneliest Road." Lenghu Mars Camp lets you "experience Mars on Earth." Three days through Qaidam Basin's fantasy landscapes.
Day 1: Chaka Salt Lake + Emerald Lake
Morning: Chaka Salt Lake (¥60, Wulan County) "Mirror of the Sky" — crystallized salt layer white as snow, shallow brine creating perfect mirror. On sunny days, sky, clouds, mountains reflected — walking in the lake like walking in heaven.
Experiences: Sky mirror photography (red dress classic), narrow-gauge train into lake (¥50), salt sculptures. 5h from Xining. Best photos: 9-10am or 4-5pm.
Afternoon: Dachaidan Emerald Lake (¥30) Pools of jade green in the Gobi — Qaidam's most stunning colors. Water shows emerald, deep blue, pale yellow from different minerals — like a spilled palette from above. Fewer tourists than Chaka but equally breathtaking. 4h drive from Chaka.
Day 2: Water Yadan + Route 315 U-Shaped Highway
Morning: Water Yadan (¥120, western Dachaidan) "World's Only Water Devil City" — wind-eroded Yadan formations standing in turquoise lake. Globally unique. Formations shaped like castles, animals, warships. Blue water against yellow Yadan — striking contrast. 2.5h from Dachaidan.
Afternoon: Route 315 U-Shaped Highway (Free) "China's Loneliest Road" — Route 315 crosses Qaidam Basin. One section forms a giant U-shape — road seemingly shooting into the sky before vanishing at the horizon. Vast Gobi, distant snow peaks. Drone shots best (watch for traffic). En route: Jinaier Lake (blue-green salt lake), West Taijinaier Lake (road through lake — blue one side, green the other).
Day 3: Lenghu Mars Camp → Departure
Morning: Lenghu Mars Camp (¥200, Lenghu Town) "Most Mars-like place on Earth" — Eboliang Yadan area, uninhabited, vegetation-free, red sand and bizarre formations like an alien planet. Mars Camp simulates Mars base with spacesuit photo experience.
Abandoned Oil Town (Free) Deserted oil town — once prosperous, completely abandoned after resources depleted. Empty buildings and equipment like a doomsday movie set. 5h from Dachaidan.
Departure: Fly from Golmud Airport or Dunhuang Airport (closer to Lenghu).
