Heyuan 3-Day Guide: Hakka Ancient City, Wanluo Lake
Wanluo Lake is South China's largest man-made lake, with 360+ green islands scattered across jade-green water, water quality meets China's Class-1 standard — the drinking water source for Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Heyuan Dinosaur Museum houses over 10,000 dinosaur egg fossils, the "trinity" of eggs, bones, and footprints is globally rare. Sujiawei is an 800-year-old Hakka village settled by Su Dongpo's descendants. Heyuan is an important stop on the Hakka cultural trail — "Hakka Ancient City, Green Heyuan."
🚶 Day 1: Wanluo Lake (South China's Largest Man-Made Lake)
Full Day: Wanluo Lake
- Wanluo Lake (¥160 including boat ticket): Also known as Xinfeng River Reservoir, South China's largest man-made lake. 360+ green islands scattered across jade-green water, ever-green year round hence named "Wanluo" (Ten Thousand Greens). Water quality meets China's Class-1 standard, directly drinkable, the drinking water source for Hong Kong and Shenzhen
- Boat tour visits three main attractions (boat ticket included in admission):
- Mirror Flower Ridge: Can overlook the lake scenery, called "Wanluo Lake's Best Viewpoint." Standing at the hilltop pavilion, 360° lake and mountain views
- Water Moon Bay: A small bay in the lake, one of the clearest water areas, suitable for swimming and playing. Has water bikes, water walking balls and other facilities
- Dragon-Phoenix Island: Named for its dragon-phoenix shape, dense vegetation with hiking trails
- Wanluo Lake Cycling (bike rental ¥30/hour): Lakeside greenway about 30km, picturesque scenery, green lake on one side and green mountains on the other
- Wanluo Lake Boardwalk (free): Wooden boardwalk built along the lake, suitable for walking and photography
Dinner
- Hakka Stuffed Tofu (¥25): Heyuan Hakka Three Treasures' #1 — fried tofu stuffed with pork filling, pan-fried until golden on both sides, then simmered in clay pot. Crispy outside, tender inside, bean aroma and meat aroma blend together
- Pork Bone Soup (¥15): Pepper pork bone soup, Heyuan's breakfast staple — generous white pepper + pork bones + pork, spicy and stomach-warming
- Hakka Salt-Baked Chicken (¥48): Baked in coarse salt, golden chicken skin, tender meat
🚶 Day 2: Dinosaur Museum + Hakka Tianxia
Morning: Dinosaur Museum
- Heyuan Dinosaur Museum (¥30): Houses over 10,000 dinosaur egg fossils! Since the first discovery in 1996, massive quantities of dinosaur eggs, dinosaur bone fossils, and dinosaur footprints have been unearthed. The "trinity" of eggs + bones + footprints is globally rare — only a few places worldwide can find all three types of dinosaur remains simultaneously. Heyuan is therefore called "China's Dinosaur Hometown"
- Museum Highlights: Dinosaur egg fossil wall (hundreds of eggs arranged like a stone wall), T-Rex skeleton model, dinosaur footprint fossils
- Guifeng Tower (free): Song Dynasty pagoda beside the museum, a Heyuan landmark
Afternoon: Hakka Tianxia
- Hakka Tianxia (¥80): Hakka cultural theme park, with Hakka tulou (round earth building) architecture displays, Hakka folk performances, Hakka food street
- Hakka Tulou: Displays traditional Hakka tulou building structure — front pond + central hall + rear crescent-shaped enclosure
- Hakka Wedding Performance: Displays traditional Hakka wedding ceremony — crying bride, embroidered ball toss, bowing to ancestors
- Hakka Folk Song: Can learn to sing a few lines of Hakka folk songs
- Hands-on Activities: Pounding glutinous rice cakes (¥10), making mugwort cakes (¥10), brewing Hakka rice wine (¥20)
Dinner
- Pig Trotter Noodles (¥15): Heyuan specialty — braised pig trotters + rice noodles + vegetables, collagen-rich
- Mugwort Cake (¥5): Traditional Hakka pastry — mugwort + glutinous rice flour, green color, has herbal fragrance
- Five-Finger Peach Soup (¥28): Heyuan specialty herbal soup — five-finger peach root + pork bone soup, has faint coconut fragrance, qi-boosting and spleen-strengthening
🚶 Day 3: Sujiawei + Bavaria Manor + Departure
Morning: Sujiawei Hakka Village
- Sujiawei (¥30): A Hakka village settled by descendants of the great Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo, with 800 years of history. Su Dongpo's great-grandson Su Taizhen migrated south during the Southern Song and settled here, now over 30 generations. Preserves 18 Ming-Qing traditional Hakka houses, unique enclosed dragon house (weilongwu) architectural style
- Welcome Bridge: Stone arch bridge entering the village, large banyan trees at the bridgehead
- Su Clan Ancestral Hall: The most spectacular building, enshrining Su Dongpo's portrait
- Hakka Mother Wine Workshop: Can taste and buy Hakka yellow wine (¥20/bottle)
