Jilin City, the only Chinese city sharing its name with the province. The Songhua River flows through, and winter rime transforms riverside trees into crystal wonderlands — one of China's Four Great Natural Wonders. This is the birthplace of the Manchu people, the second home of Peking Opera, and site of the world's largest meteorite. Three days from Wusong Island's ice fairyland to Songhua Lake's emerald expanse, from Beishan Park's ancient temples to streetside Manchu hotpot — experience the unique charm of this northern river city.
🚶 Day 1: Rime Island → Songjiang Middle Road → Jilin City
Morning: Wusong Island (雾凇岛) China's premier rime viewing destination. Every winter (December-February), vapor from the Songhua River freezes on tree branches, creating spectacular "jade trees and crystal branches." Best viewing 6-10am after cold nights. December-February only. Free admission; boat crossing ¥30.
Midday: Manchu copper hotpot (¥40-60/person) — copper pot with charcoal, sliced mutton, pickled sauerkraut, the must-eat winter comfort food. Also try Jilin煎粉 (pan-fried starch noodles, ¥5-8).
Afternoon: Songjiang Middle Road rime corridor — the best urban rime viewing stretch. Beishan Park — Ming-Qing era temples on a hilltop overlooking the city. Free.
Evening: Henan Street night market — frozen pears (¥3-5), sugar-coated hawthorn (¥5-10), roasted sweet potatoes.
🚶 Day 2: Songhua Lake → Jilin Meteorite Museum
Morning: Songhua Lake One of China's largest artificial lakes, surrounded by forested mountains. Summer: boating, fishing, lakeside walks. Winter: ice fishing, snowmobiling. Take a boat tour (¥60-100, 1.5 hours). 40 minutes from city.
Afternoon: Jilin Meteorite Museum Home of the world's largest stony meteorite (1,770kg, fell in 1976). Exhibition includes meteorite fragments from around the world. ¥30.
Evening: Try Jilin cold noodles (¥10-15) — buckwheat noodles in cold beef broth, refreshing year-round.
🚶 Day 3: Zhuque Mountain (or ski resort) → Departure
Morning: Zhuque Mountain Scenic Area — forest hiking with city and lake views. Autumn brings spectacular red foliage. ¥30. In winter, substitute with Beidahu Ski Resort (one of China's best, ¥200-400/hour with equipment).
Afternoon: Departure — Jilin Station has HSR to Changchun (40 min, ¥25) and direct trains to Beijing.
