Jinchang 3-Day Guide: China's Nickel Capital, Liqian Ancient City and the Lost Roman Legion
Jinchang — industrial city at the eastern Hexi Corridor, "China's Nickel Capital" for its vast nickel reserves. But Jinchang's most mysterious story isn't nickel — it's Liqian. In 53 BC, a Roman legion was defeated at Carrhae; remnants marched thousands of miles to China and were settled by the Han Dynasty at what is now Yongchang County. These blonde-haired, blue-eyed Roman soldiers settled, multiplied, and merged with locals — some Yongchang villagers still show European features today. Jinchang also boasts 7,000 mu of lavender fields ("Northwest Provence") and the edge of the Badain Jaran Desert. Three days exploring a millennium-old mystery spanning Eurasia.
Day 1: Liqian Ancient City — The Roman Legion's Chinese Legend
Morning: Liqian Ancient City (¥30, Yongchang County)
"Liqian" was ancient China's name for Rome. In 53 BC, Crassus led Roman legions against Parthia and was crushed at Carrhae. His son Publius's First Legion (~6,000 men) broke out and vanished from history. The "Book of Han" records that in 36 BC, Chinese troops encountered mercenaries using "fish-scale formation" (Roman testudo), later settled them at Liqian.
Highlights: Han Dynasty city wall ruins (archaeological excavations found European-featured skeletons), Liqian Culture Museum (the full Eurasian mystery), Zhelaizhai Village (some residents still have European facial features — deep eye sockets, high nose bridges), Roman-style theme street. 1h from Jinchang. ~3 hours.
Lunch: Yongchang lamb (tenderest on the Hexi Corridor, ¥40-60/jin), thick niangpi cold noodles (¥5-8), Qinghe boiled chicken (¥25-40).
Afternoon: Beihaizi Park (Free, Yongchang County) — Classical garden with Tang Dynasty pagoda and hot springs. Ancient trees, locals relaxing.
Day 2: Zijin Flower Sea + Jinchuan Mine Park
Morning: Zijin Flower Sea (Free, Jinchuan District)
Jinchang's "purple calling card" — 7,000 mu of lavender and verbena fields. June-August bloom transforms the Gobi into purple seas — called "Northwest Provence." Sunflower and rapeseed fields too. Even off-season, the desert botanical garden is worthwhile. 20min from city.
Afternoon: Jinchuan National Mine Park (¥20)
Heart of "China's Nickel Capital" — Jinchuan nickel mine is one of the world's largest sulfide copper-nickel deposits.
Highlights: Open pit mine (300+ meters deep, like a wound in the earth — staggering), Nickel Capital Exhibition Hall (discovery and development history), ecological restoration zone (greenery on slag mountains). 15min from city. ~2 hours.
Evening Food: Lamb with noodle rolls (Jinchang specialty, ¥15-25), hemp seed buns (¥1-2/each), corn meal wo wo rice (¥5-8).
Day 3: Badain Jaran Desert Edge → Departure
Morning: Badain Jaran Desert (1.5h drive north)
World's third-largest desert — famous for "five wonders": strange peaks, singing sands, lakes, sacred springs, and temples. Jinchang's northern border meets Alxa Right Banner.
Experiences: Desert surfing (off-road vehicles between dunes, ¥150-200/person), camel rides (¥80-100), sunrise from dune tops. Note: Jinchang only accesses the desert edge; deep Badain Jaran requires departing from Alxa Right Banner.
Departure: Train from Jinchang to Lanzhou (~5h) or Wuwei (~1.5h). Drive from Lanzhou ~4h.
