Lanzhou, the only provincial capital city that the Yellow River flows through. A bowl of beef noodles starts every Lanzhou morning. The Zhongshan Bridge (Iron Bridge) has witnessed a century of history, Baitashan overlooks the river rushing eastward, and Gansu Provincial Museum houses the "Flying Horse Treading on a Swallow" — China's tourism symbol. Three days along the Yellow River, savoring Northwest cuisine, feeling the Silk Road heritage.
Day 1: Yellow River Scenic Line → Zhongshan Bridge → Baitashan
Morning: Gansu Provincial Museum (free, reservation required) — must-see "Flying Horse Treading on a Swallow" (Eastern Han bronze, China's tourism emblem), Silk Road artifacts, dinosaur fossils, painted pottery. 2-3 hours.
Lunch: Authentic Lanzhou Beef Noodles — standard is "clear soup, white radish, red chili oil, green garlic sprouts, yellow noodles." Mazilu (8-15 RMB), Mogoutan (8-12 RMB), Bai Jianqiang (8-12 RMB).
Afternoon: Yellow River Scenic Line + Zhongshan Bridge (free) — 40km riverside park. The Iron Bridge built 1909 by Germans, still in use. Baitashan Park (free) north of the bridge, Yuan Dynasty white pagoda with panoramic river views.
Evening: Zhengning Road Night Market — lamb skewers (2-5 RMB), Milk Egg Laozao (5-8 RMB), Hu Douzi (3-5 RMB).
Day 2: Liujiaxia + Bingling Temple (full day)
Liujiaxia Reservoir — high gorge calm lake on the upper Yellow River. Boat through the gorge with red cliff walls. Bingling Temple Grottoes (World Heritage, 50 RMB + boat 80 RMB) — Buddhist caves from Western Qin (420 AD), earlier than Dunhuang. 216 cave shrines, 800 stone sculptures. The 27m Tang Dynasty Maitreya Buddha in Cave 171 is breathtaking.
Private car 400-600 RMB/day or day tour 200-300 RMB. 2 hours from Lanzhou.
Day 3: Wuquanshan Park → Lanzhou Old Street → Departure
Wuquanshan Park (free) — largest city park, legend says General Huo Qubing struck the ground and five springs appeared. Ming-Qing architecture. Lanzhou Old Street — shops for lily dried (local specialty) and tea sets.
Departure: Zhongchuan Airport (70km from city, 40min by intercity rail). HSR to Xining 1.5h, Xi'an 3h.
