Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture — China's largest Yi ethnic region. The annual Fire Torch Festival (July-August) is the East's wildest celebration — hundreds of thousands carrying torches in nighttime parades. Xichang's Qionghai Lake is Sichuan's 2nd largest freshwater lake; Luoji Mountain has the world's largest ancient glacial grooves; half of Lugu Lake lies in Liangshan with mysterious Mosuo "walking marriage" culture. Xichang Satellite Launch Center connects the city to China's space program.
🚶 Day 1: Qionghai Wetland → Xichang City
Morning: Qionghai Lake — 1,510m alpine lake, azure blue. 30km walking/cycling path. Bird-watching island, Moon Bay. Free (some spots ¥10-20).
Midday: Fire pit BBQ (¥40-60/person) — Liangshan's must-eat! Grilled pork, tofu, potatoes over charcoal. Drunken shrimp (¥25-35) — live shrimp "drunk" with baijiu. Jianchang pressed duck (¥20-30).
Afternoon: Jianchang Ancient City (Ming-Qing walls). Xichang Satellite Launch Center (book ahead, ¥200-300).
Evening: Night market — Yi grilled meat, buckwheat cakes (¥3-5), tuotuo meat (¥15-25).
🚶 Day 2: Luoji Mountain (Full Day)
"Emei for elegance, Luoji for emerald green." World's largest ancient glacial grooves (30m long, 10m+ deep). Black Dragon Pool (mountain lake), Fairy Cave (glacial cave with ice stalactites). Rhododendron bloom April-May. ¥65 + cable car ¥130. 1.5hrs from Xichang. 10-15°C cooler on mountain.
🚶 Day 3: Lugu Lake or Anha Yi Village → Departure
Option A: Lugu Lake (5-6hrs drive) — China's deepest alpine lake. Mosuo "walking marriage" culture. Option B: Anha Yi Village (30min from Xichang) — authentic Yi village with Bimo priest performances. Free.
