Longnan 3-Day Guide: Gansu's Jiangnan, Guane Valley's Emerald Lakes and Wanxiang Cave's Billion-Year Wonder
Longnan — Gansu's most un-Gansu-like city. Located south of the Qinling Mountains at the junction of Shaanxi, Gansu, and Sichuan, with a moist climate and lush vegetation, it's called "Gansu's Jiangnan" (southern elegance in the north). Guane Valley is hailed as "Little Jiuzhaigou" — emerald lakes, cascading waterfalls, primeval forests, and Tibetan-Qiang villages creating a stunning picture. Wanxiang Cave is Northwest China's largest karst cave — 300 million years of geological wonder in stalactite formations. Xixia Ode is the pinnacle of Eastern Han cliff inscription — perfectly preserved Han Dynasty calligraphy that still commands reverence from calligraphers. Three days exploring the Qin-Long secret realm, encountering Gansu's most beautiful face.
Day 1: Guane Valley (Full Day)
Full Day: Guane Valley National Forest Park (Ticket: ¥130, includes shuttle bus, Tanchang County)
"Longnan's Little Jiuzhaigou" — famous for canyons, waterfalls, emerald lakes, forests, and Tibetan-Qiang culture. The valley stretches ~30km with two routes: Guanzhu Valley and Eman Valley. Lake colors change with seasons — emerald green in spring/summer, blue-green in autumn, dark green in winter.
Highlights:
- 💧 Guanzhu Valley Waterfall Chain: Ten+ cascading waterfalls. Most spectacular: Guane Sky Waterfall — 50m+ drop, mist like a white silk ribbon
- 🏞️ Eman Valley: More pristine and serene than Guanzhu, emerald lakes reflecting snow peaks and colorful forests
- 🌲 Primeval Forest: Rare tree species and wildlife, autumn foliage blazes with color
- 🏘️ Luren Ancient Village: Tibetan-Qiang stone houses built into the mountainside, honest and welcoming locals
- 🌈 Rainbow Waterfall: Rainbows frequently appear across the falls in sunlight
Route: Enter via Guanzhu, exit via Eman (or vice versa), ~5-6 hours. Shuttle buses reduce walking distance. 2.5h drive from Longnan city (Wudu District).
Day 2: Wanxiang Cave → Xixia Ode
Morning: Wanxiang Cave (¥70, Wudu District)
Northwest China's largest karst cave — formed in 300-million-year-old limestone. Developed length ~5km, highest chamber 50m. Stalactites in endless forms — some like galloping elephants, others like immortals pointing the way, others like divine pillars. Constant 14°C — bring a jacket even in summer.
Highlights:
- 🌌 Moon Palace: First chamber, stalactites like a full moon
- 🏛️ Dragon Palace: Largest chamber, holds 1,000 people, stone curtains like waterfalls
- ✨ Heavenly Palace: Highest point, stalagmites piercing the dome
- 🦇 Bat Cave: Occasionally inhabited by bats
30min from Wudu. ~2 hours to visit.
Afternoon: Xixia Ode (¥50, Chengxian County)
The pinnacle of Eastern Han cliff inscriptions — formally "Ode to the Western Gorge by Li Xi, Governor of Wudu," carved in 171 AD (Jianning Year 4). Records Governor Li Xi's road construction through the western gorge. Calligraphy by Qiu Jing.
Highlights:
- 📜 Xixia Ode Stele: 220cm × 340cm, clerical script, square and powerful strokes — called "the finest clerical script stele of the Han Dynasty"
- 🏞️ Yuqiao Gorge: The gorge where the inscription sits — babbling stream, ancient trees, serene setting
- 🌉 Western Gorge Plank Road Ruins: Eastern Han-era road remains into Shu
1.5h drive from Wanxiang Cave. ~1.5 hours to visit.
Dinner — Chengxian Food: Chengxian cold noodles (more chewy than elsewhere, ¥5-8), walnut cakes (Longnan is rich in walnuts, ¥3-5), mashed potato balls with chili sauce (¥5-8).
Day 3: Wenxian Heavenly Lake → Departure
Morning: Wenxian Heavenly Lake (¥50, Wenxian County, ~3h drive)
One of China's Four Great Heavenly Lakes — alpine lake at 2,400m, ~20 sq km. Crystal blue water like a mirror, surrounded by green mountains and dense primeval forest. Spring: rhododendron sea. Autumn: crimson foliage. Legend says a heavenly maiden accidentally overturned her silver basin while bathing, creating the lake.
3h drive from Wudu. ~2 hours walking in the scenic area.
