Getting to Luoyang
By Air: Luoyang Beijiao Airport (LYA) operates direct flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and other major Chinese cities. The airport is about 10km from the city center. A taxi to downtown costs around ¥30-40, or take the airport shuttle bus at ¥10 per person.
By High-Speed Rail: Luoyang Longmen Station is a major hub on the Zhengzhou-Xi'an high-speed line. From Zhengzhou East, it's just 40 minutes (second class ¥59.5). From Xi'an North, about 1 hour 20 minutes (second class ¥124). Direct trains are also available from Beijing, Shanghai, and Wuhan.
By Regular Train: Luoyang Railway Station in Xigong District serves regular trains. The trip from Zhengzhou takes about 1.5 hours (hard seat ¥19.5).
Getting Around the City
- Metro: Luoyang has Metro Line 1 and Line 2 covering major tourist areas. Fares range from ¥2-6. QR code payment is supported.
- Bus: Extensive city bus network, ¥1-2 per ride. Tourist routes #53 and #81 go to Longmen Grottoes, #56 and #58 to White Horse Temple.
- Taxi/Ride-hailing: Flag-down fare ¥8 for the first 3km. Most intra-city trips between attractions cost ¥15-35. Didi Chuxing is recommended.

🚶 Day 1: Millennia of Buddhas & Night Scenes of the Divine Capital
Morning: Longmen Grottoes (¥90, includes West Hill, East Hill, Xiangshan Temple, and Bai Garden)
Arrive by 8:00 AM to beat the crowds. Longmen Grottoes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China's Four Great Grottoes, carved since the Northern Wei Dynasty and reaching its zenith during the Tang Dynasty. 🚶 Day 2: Cradle of Buddhism & Tang Dynasty Splendor
Morning: White Horse Temple (¥35)
Start early at White Horse Temple, China's first government-established Buddhist temple, founded in 68 AD during the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is revered as the "Cradle of Chinese Buddhism" and the "Origin of Dharma." The temple houses the earliest Buddhist scripture translation site in China — Qingliang Terrace — where the very first Chinese Buddhist sutra, The Sutra of Forty-Two Sections, was translated.
Beyond the traditional Chinese temple architecture, White Horse Temple features dedicated Thai, Burmese, and Indian-style temple compounds — four nations' Buddhist architecture on one site, making for truly unique photo opportunities.
💡 Don't miss the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard within the temple complex. The Qiyun Pagoda, built during the Jin Dynasty, is the oldest surviving above-ground structure in Luoyang — over 800 years old. Complete visit: about 2 hours.
Lunch: Near White Horse Temple

Afternoon: Emperor's Chariot Museum (¥30) → Mingtang-Tiantang Scenic Area (¥120)
Head back to the city center. First, visit the Emperor's Chariot Museum (Tianzi Jialiu), an in-situ archaeological museum built around the Eastern Zhou Dynasty "Six Horses for the Son of Heaven" chariot pit — six horses pulling one chariot, exactly matching the classical records of the Zhou king's ceremonial procession. A small but incredibly powerful site. About 40 minutes.
Next, explore the crown jewel of the Sui-Tang Luoyang National Heritage Park: the Mingtang-Tiantang Scenic Area. Mingtang was Empress Wu Zetian's imperial throne hall, while Tiantang was her royal Buddhist prayer hall — these were the two tallest wooden structures in the world at the time. Although rebuilt on the original foundations, the Tang-era archaeological strata are preserved within, giving you a visceral sense of Tang grandeur. Night: Yingtian Gate Light Show
