Getting to Ningbo:

✈️ By Air: Ningbo Lishe International Airport (NGB). Metro Line 2 connects directly to the city center (~¥8, 40 min).

Just west of the lake lies the crown jewel of Ningbo: Tianyi Pavilion (¥30, closed Monday mornings). Built in 1561 during the Ming Dynasty, it is the oldest surviving private library in China and the oldest library in all of Asia. But Tianyi Pavilion is much more than a library — it's an exquisite Jiangnan-style garden complex featuring rockeries, lotus ponds, pavilions, and winding corridors. 🌞 Afternoon: Drum Tower + Tianyi Square (3 hours)

A 10-minute walk from Tianyi Pavilion brings you to Drum Tower (free), also known as Haishu Tower — the only remaining ancient city gate tower in Ningbo. What makes it extraordinary is its architecture: a traditional Chinese stone base topped with a Romanesque bell tower, a fusion unique in China. The tower regularly hosts calligraphy and photography exhibitions. The adjacent pedestrian street is lined with snack stalls selling everything from stinky tofu to candied hawthorn.

Take Metro Line 1 one stop to Tianyi Square, Ningbo's downtown core and the largest one-stop shopping and leisure complex in China. Spanning several city blocks, it features international brands, department stores, restaurants, and on weekends, a musical fountain show. It's the perfect place to rest your feet with a coffee.

🌙 Evening: Old Bund (Laowaitan)

As dusk falls, head to the Old Bund (free), located at the northern bank of Sanjiangkou where three rivers converge. Established in 1844, it predates Shanghai's Bund by a full 20 years — making it China's earliest foreign trade port area. Stroll along the riverside promenade, where Gothic and Baroque colonial buildings house trendy bars, cafes, and restaurants. The Ningbo Museum of Art and the City Exhibition Hall are also here, both offering free admission to excellent rotating exhibitions. The area truly comes alive after dark with live music and a vibrant nightlife scene.

The building itself is a masterpiece — designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Wang Shu, its facade is constructed from reclaimed bricks and tiles from demolished old houses, creating a striking textured exterior that resembles a mountain. Inside, the museum traces Ningbo's 7,000-year history from the Hemudu Neolithic culture through its golden age as a Maritime Silk Road port.

Dinner Pick: Gang Ya Gou (缸鸭狗) at Tianyi Square, Ningbo's most famous tangyuan (glutinous rice ball) shop, operating since 1926. Their black sesame tangyuan (¥22/bowl) feature impossibly thin, silky skins and a molten sesame filling — a Ningbo institution.

Chiang Kai-shek's Former Residence (¥120 combo ticket, multiple sites) is the heart of Xikou. Spread along the banks of the Shanxi River, the complex includes Fenghao House (Chiang's birthplace), Yutai Salt Shop (the family business), the Small Western House, and Wenchang Pavilion. Fenghao House preserves the original Republican-era furnishings and offers an intimate look at one of modern China's most consequential figures. The entire town, with its river, mountains, and well-preserved architecture, is picturesque in its own right.

Xuedou Mountain (¥90, cable car ¥50 extra) is one of China's five sacred Buddhist mountains. Its crown jewel is the thousand-year-old Xuedou Temple, home to a colossal 33-meter-tall bronze statue of Maitreya (the Laughing Buddha). From the temple, hike or take the cable car to Qianzhang Rock Waterfall, a thundering 186-meter cascade — one of the highest in eastern China. On misty spring and autumn mornings, the mountain lives up to its name ("Snowy Valley"), wrapped in ethereal clouds.
