Nujiang 3-Day Guide: China's Last Secret Realm, Home of the Nu and Lisu Peoples
Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture — one of China's last secret realms. Nujiang Grand Canyon is deeper than the Grand Canyon — the Nu River thunders between Biluo Snow Mountain and Gaoligong Mountain with 3,000m vertical cliffs on both sides. Bingzhongluo is called "Where Humans and Gods Coexist." Nu and Lisu ethnic villages dot the canyon. Zip-lines were once the only way to cross the river. Ultimate destination for serious travelers.
Day 1: Nujiang Grand Canyon Drive (G219)
Drive north from Lushui along the Nu River. Highlights: Tiger Leap (narrowest point, boulders in roaring rapids), Flying Rock (boulder "flew" onto a schoolyard), historic zip-line sites. 3h from Liuku to Fugong. Food: Lisu hand-grabbed rice on banana leaf (20-30 RMB), Nu River fish (25-40 RMB), lacquer oil chicken (30-50 RMB).
Day 2: Bingzhongluo — "Where Humans and Gods Coexist" (free, full day)
The canyon's finest section, named by National Geographic as one of China's most beautiful places. Snow mountains, canyon, farmland, churches, and temples coexist.
Highlights: Zhongding Church (century-old Gothic cathedral in the canyon), Wuli Village (primitive Tea Horse Road village with wooden houses and wheat fields), Nu River First Bend (emerald water in an Ω-shape), Stone Gate Pass, Peach Blossom Island. 3-4h from Fugong. Guesthouse 80-200 RMB.
Day 3: Dulong River (option, requires border permit) or Departure
Dulong River — last minority area in China to get road access. Dulong people's facial tattoo women — blue facial patterns, fewer than 30 survivors. Emerald-green river, deeper narrower canyon. 6-7h from Bingzhongluo (dangerous mountain road).
Departure: Nujiang Fengping Airport or bus to Kunming (10h). Budget: 800-1500 economy, 2000-3500 comfortable.
