Qingyang 3-Day Guide: Longdong's Granary, Birthplace of Chinese Agricultural Civilization
Qingyang — a Loess Plateau city in eastern Gansu, called "Longdong's Granary" and "High Sky, Thick Earth." Birthplace of Chinese agricultural civilization — Zhou ancestor Bu Zu taught people farming here, launching the prelude to Chinese agrarian culture. North Grotto Temple is one of Gansu's four great grottoes, famous for exquisite Tang Dynasty sculptures. Zhou Ancestral Tomb records the Zhou Dynasty's origins. Nanliang Revolutionary Base was the earliest Soviet regime in the Shaanxi-Gansu border region. Qingyang's fragrant sachets, paper cutting, and shadow puppetry are national-level intangible cultural heritage. Three days exploring Chinese roots, touching Longdong's yellow earth, savoring farming culture.
Day 1: North Grotto Temple → Qingcheng Zhou Ancestral Tomb
Morning: North Grotto Temple (¥30, Xifeng District)
One of Gansu's four great grottoes — founded 509 AD (Northern Wei), with continued carving through Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, and Song. 296 cave shrines, 2,126 sculptures — Longdong's largest grotto complex.
Highlights: Cave 165 (largest cave — seven Tang Dynasty Buddhas, each 8m tall, full faces and flowing robes, Tang sculpture masterworks), Tang Dynasty murals, Fuzhong Mountain (grottoes carved in sandstone cliffs, Pu River below), Cave 240 (Northern Wei representative, ancient and powerful). 30min from Qingyang. ~2 hours.
Afternoon: Qingcheng Zhou Ancestral Tomb (¥20, Qingcheng County)
Starting point of Chinese agricultural civilization — Zhou ancestor Bu Zu (ancestor of Zhou Wenwang) led his people to Qingyang at the end of the Xia Dynasty, teaching farming and developing agriculture, laying the Zhou tribe's foundation. His grandson Gong Liu further developed agriculture, and the Zhou eventually migrated east to Guanzhong and founded the Zhou Dynasty. National key cultural heritage site. 1.5h from Qingyang city.
Food: Qingyang hele buckwheat noodles (¥8-12), clay pot stew (土暖锅, ¥20-35), buckwheat noodles (¥5-8).
Day 2: Nanliang Revolution Memorial → Ziwu Ridge
Morning: Nanliang Revolution Memorial (Free, Huachi County)
Earliest Soviet regime in the Shaanxi-Gansu border — 1934: Liu Zhidan, Xie Zichang, and Xi Zhongxun established the Shaanxi-Gansu Border Soviet Government. Xi Zhongxun was only 21 when he became Soviet chairman. 2h from Qingyang city.
Afternoon: Ziwu Ridge National Forest Park (Free, Huachi County)
Largest natural forest on the Loess Plateau — Ziwu Ridge runs 200+ km north-south, 80%+ forest coverage. A forest of this scale on the arid Loess Plateau is itself a miracle.
Highlights: Natural secondary forest (Liaodong oak, Chinese pine, white birch), possible wildlife encounters (deer, wild boar), Qin Straight Road ruins (Qin Shi Huang's military highway crossing Ziwu Ridge — 2,000-year-old "expressway" remains). 1h from Nanliang. ~3 hours.
Day 3: Qingyang Folk Culture → Departure
Morning: Qingyang Folk Culture Experience
"China's Folk Culture & Art Capital" — multiple national-level intangible heritage items: Daoqing Shadow Puppetry (leather shadow figures with Daoqing singing, 1,000+ years), Qingyang Paper Cutting (vivid colors, exaggerated forms), Qingyang Fragrant Sachets (hand-embroidered sachets, liveliest during Dragon Boat Festival), Longdong Cave Dwellings (yellow earth's unique homes — arched caves dug into cliffs, warm in winter, cool in summer). Buy at folk culture street (free) — sachets ¥10-30, paper cuts ¥5-15.
