Sinharaja Rainforest is Sri Lanka's last primary tropical rainforest (UNESCO World Heritage). Adam's Peak is Sri Lanka's most sacred pilgrimage mountain. Ratnapura means "City of Gems" in Sinhalese.
Day 1: Gem Mines + Gem Museum
Morning: Gem Mine Visit (Free-¥30) Hundreds of mines around Ratnapura — traditional vertical shaft hand-mining. See working mines: miners 10-20m underground with hand tools, washing gravel to find sapphires. Gem Street — hundreds of dealers and shops. Buy carefully — certified shops only.
Afternoon: National Gem and Jewellery Authority (Free) Sri Lanka's gem industry history and grading standards.
Day 2: Sinharaja Rainforest (Full Day)
Full Day: Sinharaja Rainforest (~¥50 + Guide ¥30, UNESCO World Heritage) Sri Lanka's last primary tropical rainforest — 190 km², UNESCO World Natural Heritage. 50%+ of Sri Lanka's endemic species — purple-faced langur, Sri Lanka thrush, endemic butterflies and lizards.
Experiences: Primary rainforest hike with guide (giant canopy trees), butterfly watching, wildlife (langurs, giant squirrels, birds), hidden waterfalls and streams, orchids and ferns. 2h drive from Ratnapura. 5-6 hours.
Day 3: Adam's Peak Direction → Departure
Morning: Adam's Peak Base (Nallathanniya, ~2h drive) Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) — sacred mountain for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians. 2,243m, 5,200 stone steps to summit. Pilgrimage season December-May. Off-season: hike partway for views.
Departure: Ratnapura to Colombo ~3h (bus ¥5-10, train available).
