Lhoka (Shannan) 3-Day Guide: Source of Tibetan Culture, Yamdrok Lake and Tibet's First Palace
Lhoka (Shannan) — birthplace of Tibetan civilization. Tibet's first palace (Yumbulagang), first monastery (Samye), first farmland (Suodang) all here. Tibetan ancestors originated in the Yarlung Valley. Yamdrok Lake is one of Tibet's three sacred lakes — sapphire blue set among mountains. Tombs of Tibetan Kings hold generations of Tubo dynasty rulers. Lhoka is called "Tibet's Soul Homeland" — to understand Tibetan civilization's origins, you must come here.
Day 1: Samye Monastery → Chimpu Hermitage
Morning: Samye Monastery (¥40, Chanang County) Tibet's first complete Buddhist monastery — founded 762 AD (Tubo period) by Padmasambhava. Layout follows Buddhist cosmology — central Utse Hall (Mount Meru) surrounded by four colored stupas (four continents). Architecture blends Tibetan (ground floor), Chinese (middle), and Indian (top) styles. 2.5h from Lhasa.
Afternoon: Chimpu Hermitage (Free, 15km NE of Samye) Tibet's most famous retreat site — Padmasambhava meditated here. Valley scattered with 100+ meditation caves — monks and practitioners still do retreats. Peaceful valley with flowing stream. 30min drive + 1h walk.
Day 2: Yumbulagang → Changzhuk Temple → Tombs of Tibetan Kings
Morning: Yumbulagang (¥30, Nedong District) Tibet's first palace — built 2nd century BC, 1,000+ years older than Potala Palace. Five-story watchtower on a hilltop. Legend: Nyatri Tsenpo (first Tibetan king) descended from heaven and was carried here on people's shoulders, establishing the Tubo dynasty. Horse ride up ¥30 or walk 30min.
Changzhuk Temple (¥30) Built during Songtsen Gampo's reign — houses Tibet's most precious pearl Thangka (Avalokiteshvara image made of strung pearls). Princess Wencheng once lived here.
Afternoon: Tombs of Tibetan Kings (¥40, Qonggyai County) Tubo dynasty kings' tombs — including Songtsen Gampo and Trisong Detsen. Huge burial mounds on hillsides, stone lions and steles before Songtsen Gampo's tomb.
Day 3: Yamdrok Lake → Departure
Full Day: Yamdrok Lake (Viewpoint ¥120, Nagarzê County) One of Tibet's three sacred lakes — 675 km², 4,441m altitude. Sapphire blue like a gem — first glimpse from Kampala Pass (4,990m) is breathtaking. Lake curves like coral branches; aerial view resembles a blue-green scorpion.
Best viewpoints: Kampala Pass (classic — overlooking entire lake), lakeside (walk to water's edge). 2h from Lhasa via Kampala Pass. Loop back to Lhasa ~3h.
