Shizuishan 3-Day Guide: Half Desert, Half Lake, the Pearl Beyond the Helan Mountains
Shizuishan, Ningxia's northernmost city, named for rocks at the Helan Mountains-Yellow River confluence that "stick out like a mouth." Home to China's most unique wetland — Shahu Lake, where 22 sq km of desert neighbors 45 sq km of lake, hosting millions of migratory birds. Helan Mountain rock art records ancient peoples' lives from 10,000+ years ago. Once the "Coal City Beyond the Wall," Shizuishan has transformed from mining pits to an ecological city. Three days experiencing the magical fusion of desert and water town, touching ancient memories in millennial rock paintings.
Day 1: Shahu Lake — Half Desert, Half Water
Full Day: Shahu Lake Scenic Area (Ticket: ¥60 + Boat: ¥70)
One of China's Top 10 Charming Wetlands — desert and lake sit side by side, creating a world-class "sand-water interdependence" wonder. Millions of migratory birds rest here during spring and autumn, including first-class protected black storks and Chinese mergansers.
Route: Boat through reed marshes (waterbirds flying beside the boat, wild ducks in flocks) → Desert zone (golden dunes — camel rides ¥80, sand sliding ¥30, desert ATVs ¥100) → Birdwatching tower (telescopes; September-October best for swans, egrets, herons) → Wetland Museum (ecosystem and migration knowledge).
Shahu Food: Shahu Big Fish Head (carp head stew, incredibly fresh, ¥68-98/portion — must-try!), hand-grabbed Ningxia mutton (tender, not gamey, ¥60-80/jin), youxiang fried bread (crispy outside, soft inside, ¥3-5).
Evening: Shahu Sunset — One of Ningxia's finest. Sun sinks below the desert edge, golden light flooding the lake, reed silhouettes swaying in the wind. Best viewed from high ground in the desert zone.
Day 2: Helan Mountain Rock Art + North Wudang Temple
Morning: Helan Mountain Rock Art (¥70)
World Heritage tentative list — records ancient nomadic life from late Paleolithic to Western Xia. Shizuishan section has 5,000+ petroglyphs, one of the densest areas.
Highlights: Sun God petroglyph (iconic — half-human half-beast face radiating light beams), Hunting Scene (archers pursuing prey), Horseback Archery (nomads riding and shooting), Flock of Ibex (running and jumping in varied poses). Rock Art Museum (free, on-site): discovery history, interactive rubbing experience, 3D recreations of ancient life. ~3 hours.
Lunch — Dawukou District: Sheep offal soup (local breakfast standard, ¥15-20), sanzi fried dough (golden crispy, ¥10-15/jin), cold tossed sand onion (desert wild vegetable, refreshing, ¥12-18).
Afternoon: North Wudang Temple (Free)
Famous Northwest Taoist sanctuary — founded Tang Dynasty, on Helan Mountain's eastern foot. 365 stone steps to entrance (one for each day of the year). Summit views of Yellow River and Tengger Desert.
Evening: Xinghai Lake (Free) — City wetland park, wide open water. Evening stroll, sunset, Helan Mountain silhouette in the distance.
Day 3: Mine Park + Yellow River Ferry → Departure
Morning: Shizuishan Mine Geological Park (¥30)
Shizuishan rose through coal — once called "Coal City Beyond the Wall." Park built on abandoned mine pits, showcasing the transformation from coal city to eco-city.
Highlights: 100m-deep open pit (stunning industrial ruins), vintage mining equipment (excavators, ore carts), ecological restoration zone (greened reclaimed pits).
Afternoon: Yellow River Ancient Ferry (Free, Huinong District)
Shizuishan is the Yellow River's entry point into Ningxia. Traditional sheepskin rafts still operate — cross the Yellow River (¥50/person). Raftsmen sing "Hua'er" (Northwestern folk songs) while navigating. River is wide here, golden in the sunset, wetlands full of waterbirds.
Departure: HSR from Shizuishan to Yinchuan (~30min, ¥25). Yinchuan Hedong Airport connects nationwide.
