Suining 3-Day Travel Guide: Hometown of Guanyin, Lotus City, Pearl of Central Sichuan
Suining, known as the "Hometown of Chinese Guanyin Culture," is often called "Little Chengdu" or the "Great Eastern River City." Here, thousand-year-old temples and the clear waters of the Fujiang River create a stunning landscape. The unique salt-lake floating experience at China Dead Sea and the spectacular summer lotus blooms on Shenglian Island make Suining a hidden gem in central Sichuan waiting to be explored.
🚶 Day 1: Thousand-Year Buddhist Heritage — Guanyin Culture Tour
Morning: Lingquan Temple (Free)
Built during the Sui Dynasty's Kaihuang era, Lingquan Temple is the heart of the folk Guanyin pilgrimage site. Atop the hill stands a magnificent 9-meter-tall bronze Thousand-Eyed Guanyin statue, gazing compassionately over the entire city. Inside the temple, the "Guanyin Well" is said to have been formed from the tears of Princess Miaoshan — the water is crystal-clear and sweet, with pilgrims lining up to collect it for blessings. A folk song tells of "Three Guanyin Sisters" — the eldest at Lingquan Temple, the second at Guangde Temple, and the youngest who traveled far to Putuoshan.
Arrive before 8 AM to avoid the crowds. The hike up takes about 20 minutes through ancient trees shrouded in morning mist, accompanied by Buddhist chants.
Afternoon: Guangde Temple (¥20)
Paired with Lingquan Temple as the "Twin Jewels of Guanyin's Hometown," Guangde Temple was built during the Tang Dynasty's Kaiyuan era and earned the title "Foremost Zen Forest from the West." It received 11 imperial decrees across the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties. The main hall features two dragon columns carved with 99 golden dragons. The temple enshrines Monk Keyou, a grandson of Emperor Zhongzong of Tang, revered by emperors as an "Incarnation of Guanyin."
Evening: Longfeng Ancient Town (Free)
Nestled in a bend of the Fujiang River, Longfeng Ancient Town is named for its dragon-head-north, phoenix-tail-east terrain. Legend says it was the site of the Western Han Miaozhuang King's castle. Ming-Qing era buildings line the cobblestone streets with upturned eaves and ancient charm. Don't miss the Longfeng Museum — the first community-funded museum in China.
Food recommendations:
- 🍜 Guo Chunying Cold Noodles: Crystal-clear jelly noodles with secret chili oil, garlic sauce, and crushed peanuts — spicy, numbing, and addictive. ¥5-8
- 🍘 Qu Fried Dough Twist: Thousands of silvery strands woven into a crispy twist. Available in original, salted pepper, and seaweed flavors. ¥10-15/bag
- 🥟 Suining Tofu Skin: Thin as cicada wings, richly braised and aromatic. ¥5-10
🚶 Day 2: Dead Sea Floating — A Magical Water World
Full Day: China Dead Sea Resort (Daying County, ¥150-198)
Located in Daying County at 30°N latitude, this salt-lake miracle offers water with a density of 1.2kg/L — you float naturally, just like the real Dead Sea.
Must-do activities:
- 🏊 Salt-Lake Floating: Lie back in 38°C salt-water pools and feel instant weightlessness
- 🧖 Black Mud Spa: Cover yourself in mineral-rich black mud, rinse after 15 minutes for silky-smooth skin
- 🌊 Wave Pool: Artificial waves — kids' paradise
- 🏖️ Beach Zone: Arabian-style architecture + artificial beach, perfect for photos
About 40 minutes by car from downtown Suining. Direct buses available. Bring swimwear and towels — food inside is overpriced.
Evening: Daying County Food
- 🐟 River Fish: Fresh Fujiang fish — steamed, braised, or boiled in spicy sauce. ¥40-80/person
- 🍲 Zhuotong Chicken: Daying specialty, cured with ancient Zhuotong well salt brine. ¥15-25
🚶 Day 3: Lotus City Stroll and Celadon Discovery
Morning: Shenglian Island — World Lotus Expo Garden (Free, bloom season Jun-Sep)
Shenglian Island gathers 800+ lotus varieties from 23 countries across 153,000 square meters. From Egyptian red water lilies to Australian giant white lotuses, from fragrant nine-grade lotuses to giant Victoria water lilies — they bloom in spectacular competition each summer, creating a "city among lotuses, people in a painting" wonderland. The 2024 Lotus Festival welcomed over 3 million visitors.
Visit 6-8 AM when lotuses are at their most beautiful and crowds are thin. Rent a bicycle for island riding (¥20/hour) or enjoy covered-bowl tea by the lotus pond.
Afternoon: Song Porcelain Museum (Free, reservation required)
The crown jewel is a national-treasure-grade Southern Song lotus-leaf-covered jar, unearthed from a Suining kiln site. Its glaze is warm and jade-like, hailed as the "King of Chinese Porcelain." The museum also houses extensive Song Dynasty celadon and white porcelain collections.
Evening: Stroll along Fujiang River
The most pleasant activity in Suining — walk along the river as sunset paints the water red, with the silhouette of Shenglian Island's lotuses in the distance. A cup of covered-bowl tea at a riverside teahouse costs just ¥10-15. Slow down and savor the leisurely pace of this central Sichuan city.
