Taizhou (Zhejiang) 3-Day Guide: Poetic Jiangnan Between Mountains and Sea, Immortal Residence and Ancient City
Taizhou — "Mountain-Sea Water City" on Zhejiang's East China Sea coast. Shenxianju (Immortal's Residence) is one of "China's Top Ten Most Beautiful Canyons" — bizarre peaks like a fairy realm. Tiantai Mountain birthed Buddhist Tiantai sect — Guoqing Temple is the ancestral temple for Japanese and Korean Tiantai Buddhism. Linhai Ancient City has China's best-preserved Ming Dynasty anti-pirate walls — "Jiangnan's Badaling." Ziyang Ancient Street retains millennium-old everyday life. Three days of Jiangnan poetry where mountains meet sea.
Day 1: Shenxianju (Full Day)
Full Day: Shenxianju Scenic Area (¥125 + Cable Car ¥120, Xianju County) "Where Immortals Dwell" — volcanic rhyolite formations, jagged peaks in fantastical shapes. Clouds swirling between peaks create fairy-tale atmosphere.
Highlights: Ruyi Bridge (glass bridge between peaks, transparent sections, heart-pounding), South Heaven Peak (360° panorama), General Rock (iconic peak profile like a warrior), Feitian Waterfall (100m+ drop), forest trails between peaks. North Gate in, South Gate out. 5-6 hours walking. 1.5h from Taizhou.
Food: Xianju noodles with toppings (¥12-18), Xianju wheat cakes (¥5-8).
Day 2: Tiantai Mountain + Guoqing Temple
Morning: Guoqing Temple (¥15, Tiantai County) Buddhist Tiantai sect ancestral temple — founded 598 AD (Sui Dynasty), "ancestral temple" for Japanese/Korean Tiantai Buddhism. Ancient trees, Sui Dynasty pagoda, millennium-old plum tree still blooming. Extremely peaceful.
Afternoon: Tiantai Mountain Stone Bridge (¥60) Tiantai's iconic landscape — natural stone bridge spanning a gorge with waterfall thundering beneath. "Stone Bridge Flying Waterfall" — "World's Greatest Wonder." Bridge ~7m long, barely foot-width wide, waterfall passing through. Tiantai was the terminus of the "Tang Poetry Road" — 300+ Tang Dynasty poets visited. 1h from Taizhou.
Food: Tiantai flat dumplings (¥8-12), jiaobingtong (like spring rolls, ¥5-8), five-flavor porridge (¥5-8).
Day 3: Linhai Ancient City → Ziyang Street → Departure
Morning: Linhai City Wall (Jiangnan Great Wall, ¥60) "Jiangnan's Badaling" — China's best-preserved Ming anti-pirate walls, 6,000+ meters. Qi Jiguang defended against wokou pirates here — "hollow watchtowers" were his invention. Views of Linhai city and Lingjiang River.
Ziyang Ancient Street (Free) Linhai's oldest commercial street — millennium-old flagstone road with Ming-Qing buildings. Traditional workshops: wheat cakes, scale-making, blacksmithing. Best "yanhuoqi" (local life) atmosphere.
Linhai Food (Highlight!): Egg white wrapped noodles (deep-fried, ¥10-15), wheat cakes (mei gan cai filling, ¥5-8), zaogeng (wine-lee seafood soup, ¥8-12), black rice mochi (¥3-5), Sanmen green crab (plump, autumn best, ¥80-120/jin).
