Weinan 3-Day Guide: Mount Hua (Huashan) — The Most Dangerous Mountain Under Heaven
Weinan, the eastern gateway of Shaanxi, named for its position south of the Wei River. Birthplace of Cangjie (inventor of Chinese characters) and Dukang (legendary inventor of wine). But what makes Weinan world-famous is Mount Hua — the West Great Mountain among China's Five Sacred Mountains, hailed as "the most dangerously beautiful mountain under heaven." Huashan's sheer cliffs, vertical iron-chain ladders, and cloud-sea summits are legendary. The Plank Walk in the Sky and Blue Dragon Ridge are Huashan's most thrilling experiences — beneath your feet lies a bottomless abyss, behind you a vertical cliff face. Hancheng is Weinan's other calling card — hometown of Sima Qian, featuring Shaanxi's best-preserved Ming-Qing ancient city. Three days to conquer Huashan, savor Hancheng, and experience Weinan.
Day 1: Mount Hua (Full Day Hike)
Full Day: Mount Hua Scenic Area (Ticket: ¥160 peak season Mar-Nov; ¥100 off-season)
Huashan's Five Peaks: East Peak (Chaoyang — sunrise viewing), West Peak (Lianhua — most beautiful), South Peak (Luoyan — highest at 2,154.9m), North Peak (Yuntai — lowest), Central Peak (Yunü).
Classic Route: West Peak Cable Car Up + North Peak Cable Car Down (Recommended)
This route saves energy and covers all highlights:
- 🚡 West Peak Cable Car (¥140): Ride from Wengyu to West Peak, spectacular valley views en route
- ⛰️ West Peak (Lotus Peak): Huashan's most beautiful peak, shaped like a blooming lotus. Cuiyun Temple is the legendary location of "Lotus Lantern"
- 🌊 South Peak (Landing Goose Peak): Huashan's highest at 2,154.9m, panoramic views. Plank Walk is nearby
- 😱 Plank Walk in the Sky (¥30): Huashan's most thrilling experience — walk on wooden planks bolted to a vertical cliff face with safety harness. Bottomless abyss below. Not for those afraid of heights!
- 🌅 East Peak (Morning Sun Peak): Best sunrise viewing point. Blue Dragon Ridge is nearby
- 🦅 Blue Dragon Ridge (¥30): Flip down a vertical cliff face to reach the Chess Pavilion. Nearly as thrilling as the Plank Walk
- 🏔️ Central Peak (Jade Maiden Peak): Small but exquisite, legend of Duke Mu of Qin's daughter playing the flute here
- 🚡 North Peak Cable Car (¥80): Ride down from North Peak to end the trip
Total: Ticket + Shuttle + West Peak Cable Car + North Peak Cable Car ≈ ¥480
Full walk takes about 5-7 hours. Recommended for average fitness levels.
Gear: Non-slip hiking shoes (essential!), gloves for iron chains (¥2 at base), sunscreen + hat, water (¥10-15/bottle on mountain, bring 2-3).
Accommodation: Mountain lodgings (¥200-800/night). For sunrise, stay at East Peak.
Day 2: Xiyue Temple → Sima Qian Temple → Hancheng Ancient City
Morning: Xiyue Temple (¥40)
Imperial sacrifice temple at Huashan's foot — where emperors worshiped the sacred mountain. Built during Emperor Wu of Han's reign. Grand scale, axis layout, called "Shaanxi's Little Forbidden City." Haoling Hall is the main hall with exquisite architecture. 15min from Huashan Visitor Center.
Afternoon: Sima Qian Temple (¥50, Hancheng City)
Memorial to China's greatest historian — Sima Qian wrote the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) while imprisoned, which Lu Xun called "the ultimate song of historians, the rhymeless Li Sao." The temple is built on a cliff — 99 steps from base to shrine symbolize his difficult but unyielding life.
Evening: Hancheng Ancient City (Free)
One of Shaanxi's best-preserved Ming-Qing ancient cities — cobblestone streets lined with traditional courtyard homes. Confucius Temple, City God Temple, and Qingshan Temple are well preserved. Dangjia Village (10km from city) has 120+ courtyard homes — hailed as "a living fossil of traditional Chinese village architecture."
Hancheng food: Mutton hele noodles (¥10-15), mutton houbu soup (¥8-12), Hancheng wontons (¥8-12), Sichuan pepper cakes (¥3-5). 1.5h from Weinan city.
Day 3: Heyang Wetland → Shaohua Mountain → Departure
Morning: Heyang Scenic Area (¥60, Heyang County)
The largest warm-spring lake wetland along the Yellow River — called "Little Jiangnan." Virgin Spring is the core — constant 31°C, never freezes. Legend says brides-to-be bathed here before weddings. Bamboo raft through reed marshes (¥30-50). Summer lotus blooms, migratory bird flocks. 1h from Hancheng.
Afternoon: Shaohua Mountain National Park (¥30)
Huashan's "sister mountain" — named for being smaller. Less precipitous than Huashan but beautiful, fewer tourists, serene and pleasant. Qianlong Temple is an ancient monastery with a millennium-old ginkgo tree. Glass walkway (¥20) is a recent addition. 30min from Weinan city.
Departure: HSR from Weinan North to Xi'an (~20min) or Beijing (~4.5h).
