Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture — southeast Yunnan's hidden gem. Puzhehei (made famous by "Dad, Where Are We Going?") features 10,000 mu of lotus ponds, karst peaks, and crystal lakes like an ink painting. Bamei is the real "Shangri-La" — enter and exit through caves by boat, emerging into a hidden valley. Wenshan is also China's source of precious sanqi (ginseng) herb.
Day 1: Puzhehei (free entry, activities 100-200 RMB, 5A scenic area)
"Place with many fish and shrimp" in Yi language. 68 connected karst lakes, 300+ isolated peaks, 10,000 mu of lotus ponds (June-August bloom is fairy-tale beautiful).
Highlights: boat through karst peaks and lotus ponds (100-200 RMB), lotus sea (June-Aug), Qinglong Mountain viewpoint (200 steps for panoramic karst+lake+village view), water fights between boats (most fun experience), wetland sunset. 2h from Wenshan. Homestay 100-300 RMB.
Food: lotus leaf fried egg (10-15 RMB), lotus pond fish (25-35 RMB), sanqi chicken stew (30-50 RMB), five-color sticky rice (5-10 RMB).
Day 2: Bamei "Lost World" (100 RMB, full day)
True Shangri-La — enter and exit the village by boat through two cave tunnels. Dark underground river, then dramatic reveal of a hidden valley: green mountains, Zhuang village, rice paddies, streams, waterwheels. 2.5h from Puzhehei. Walk the area 3-4 hours.
Day 3: Wenshan Museum (free) → Laojun Mountain (30 RMB) → Departure
Museum: Zhuang bronze drum culture, Miao silver jewelry and embroidery, sanqi herb exhibit. Laojun Mountain — primeval forest meets karst, "First Peak of Southeast Yunnan."
Puzhehei Airport or HSR to Kunming 1.5h. Budget: 600-1200 economy, 1500-2500 comfortable.
