Xining, a plateau city at 2,261m elevation, is the eastern gateway to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. A melting pot of Han, Tibetan, Hui, Tu, and Mongol cultures. Ta'er Temple (Kumbum Monastery) gleams with golden roofs, Dongguan Mosque ranks among Northwest China's four great mosques, and Qinghai Lake shimmers like a sapphire on the plateau. Summer average temperature is 17°C — one of China's best summer retreats.
Day 1: Ta'er Temple → Dongguan Mosque → Mojia Street
Morning: Ta'er Temple (5A scenic area, 70-80 RMB) One of the six great monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism's Gelug sect, birthplace of Tsongkhapa. Founded 1379, built into the mountainside with golden roofs and red walls.
Highlights: Grand Golden Tile Hall (11m gold-covered stupa), Butter Sculpture Hall (intricate yak butter sculptures recreated annually), Applique Thangka, Buddhist murals. 3-4 hours. 25km from city center.
Afternoon: Dongguan Mosque (free) One of Northwest China's four great mosques, founded in the Ming Dynasty, blending Chinese palace and Arabic architecture. Accommodates 3,000 worshippers. Visit outside prayer times.
Evening: Mojia Street food market Xining's liveliest food street. Roasted lamb skewers (2-5 RMB), Niangpi (Qinghai cold noodles with mustard and chili, 5-8 RMB), Tianpei (sweet fermented barley drink, 3-5 RMB), yak yogurt (5-10 RMB).
Day 2: Qinghai Lake (full day)
Qinghai Lake — China's largest inland saltwater lake at 4,543 sq km, elevation 3,260m. The water color shifts from light blue to deep blue to emerald green.
Route (360km loop from Xining): Riyue Mountain (40 RMB), Daotang River (flows west — China's only such river), Erlangjian Scenic Area (90 RMB, boardwalk extending into the lake, boat tours), West Ring Road (most beautiful stretch — rapeseed flowers in July), Bird Island (best May-June).
Transport: Private car 500-800 RMB/day (150-200 RMB/person for 4 sharing), or join a day tour (200-300 RMB). 2.5 hours from Xining.
Lunch: Tibetan tent by the lake — hand-eaten lamb (40-60 RMB/jin), tsampa (5-10 RMB), butter tea (10-15 RMB/pot).
Day 3: Qinghai Provincial Museum → North Zen Temple → Departure
Morning: Qinghai Provincial Museum (free, reservation required) Best place to understand Qinghai's history. Notable for painted pottery (Qinghai is a birthplace of Chinese painted pottery), gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara, and ethnic costume exhibitions.
Afternoon: North Zen Temple (free) Founded in the Northern Wei, built into red danxia cliffs — called "Mogao of the Northwest." Surviving cliff murals and Buddha images. Panoramic city views from the top.
Departure: Caojiabao Airport (Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an flights). High-speed rail to Lanzhou 1.5h, Xi'an 4.5h.
