Xishuangbanna — China's only tropical rainforest nature reserve. Year-round warmth (average 21°C), 1/6 of China's plant species. Dai Water Splashing Festival is the East's most joyful celebration. Wild Elephant Valley for close encounters with Asian elephants, Tropical Botanical Garden with 13,000+ species, and Starlight Night Market at Gaozhuang is a slice of Southeast Asia.
Day 1: Tropical Botanical Garden (80 RMB) → Starlight Night Market
Chinese Academy of Sciences botanical garden — 1,125 hectares, 13,000+ species. Must-see: tropical flower garden, palm grove, rainforest zone (strangler figs, buttress roots, cauliflory), water garden with giant Victoria water lilies (up to 2m diameter). 4-5 hours, 1 hour from Jinghong.
Evening: Gaozhuang Starlight Night Market — hundreds of stalls along the Lancang River. Dai BBQ (15-30 RMB), mango sticky rice (10-15 RMB), fresh juice (8-15 RMB), Dai costume photo rental (30-50 RMB).
Day 2: Wild Elephant Valley (60 RMB, cable car 50) → Primeval Forest Park (65 RMB)
Morning: Wild Elephant Valley — China's only place to see wild Asian elephants. Elephant school show (30 RMB) — elephants painting, playing football, dancing. Canopy walkway and cable car for rainforest views.
Afternoon: Primeval Forest Park — peacock release (hundreds of peacocks flying down the mountain), rainforest canopy walk, Hani ethnic village.
Food: lemongrass grilled fish (20-30 RMB), pineapple purple rice (10-15 RMB), sour bamboo shoot chicken (25-40 RMB), Dai hand-grab rice on banana leaf (20-30 RMB/person).
Day 3: Manting Royal Garden (40 RMB) → Grand Buddhist Temple (free) → Departure
Manting Garden — 1,300-year-old Dai royal garden with white pagoda and octagonal pavilion. Evening bonfire show (280 RMB). Grand Buddhist Temple — golden Theravada Buddhist temple, spiritual center of local Dai people.
Departure: Gasa Airport (Kunming 1h). HSR to Kunming 3h (150-250 RMB).
