Ya'an 3-Day Citywalk Guide: Rain City's Tea Horse Road & Bifengxia Pandas
Ya'an — "Rain City" averaging 200+ rainy days per year, one of China's wettest cities. Mengding Mountain is the birthplace of world tea culture — 2,000 years ago Wu Lizhen planted the first tea tree here, "Water from the heart of Yangzi River, tea from the summit of Mengding Mountain" has been chanted through the ages. Bifengxia Panda Base is the best place for close encounters with national treasures — dozens of pandas, some lazy, some playful, melting hearts. Shangli Ancient Town is an important station on the Tea Horse Road, an ink-painting-like Western Sichuan town with flowing water under Erxian Bridge. Niubei Mountain's cloud sea is hailed as "China's Largest Viewing Platform," with 360° unobstructed views of Minya Konka, King of Sichuan Mountains. Ya fish is impossibly tender, Ya rain nourishes silently, Ya women are naturally beautiful — the "Three Ya's" are Ya'an's most beautiful calling cards. Three days sipping tea and watching pandas in misty drizzle.

- Bifengxia Pandas: Most active 9-11am, recommend entering at opening. Pandas come out even in rain (they don't mind getting wet)

- Shangli Ancient Town: Strongly recommend staying overnight. Early morning without tourists, misty drizzle is when it's most beautiful
- Niubei Mountain Weather: Check forecast 2 days ahead. Sunny = epic photos; foggy = wasted money. Cloud sea probability highest in autumn/winter
- Dada vs Tata Noodles: Try both! Dada is chewier, Tata has richer broth
- Hanyuan Sichuan Pepper: Soul seasoning of Sichuan cuisine, far superior to ordinary pepper, ¥15-30/bag worth buying
