Ili 3-Day Guide: Beyond the Great Wall's Jiangnan — Lavender Seas & Tianshan Flower Valleys
Ili (Yili), officially Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, hailed as "Jiangnan Beyond the Great Wall." Cradled by Tianshan Mountains, the Ili River Valley is lush and blooms year-round. Nalati Grassland is one of the world's four great alpine valley grasslands; Kalajun's "Body Grassland" has curves as beautiful as paintings; Huocheng's lavender fields span tens of thousands of acres every June; Guozigou Bridge spans a gorge — Tianshan's most spectacular engineering marvel. Ili is Xinjiang's gentlest corner, guaranteed to shatter your "all desert" impressions.
🚶 Day 1: Sayram Lake → Guozigou Bridge → Huocheng Lavender
Morning: Sayram Lake "The Last Tear of the Atlantic" — Xinjiang's highest-altitude largest alpine lake (2,073m). Impossibly blue, crystal clear. 90km ring road, every angle wallpaper-worthy. June-July wildflowers bloom at lakeside. Tickets ¥70 + shuttle ¥75 (self-driving around lake also possible).
Midday: Guozigou Bridge One of China's most beautiful highway bridges — cable-stayed bridge spanning a 300m-deep V-shaped gorge. Observation platform with snow mountain backdrop. Free.
Afternoon: Huocheng Lavender (mid-June to early July) China's largest lavender base, comparable to Provence. Mid-late June peak bloom — endless purple sea with lavender fragrance. Jieyou Princess Lavender Garden (¥35) or Lucao Gou town (free, more authentic).
🚶 Day 2: Nalati Grassland (Full Day)
Full Day: Nalati One of the world's four great alpine valley grasslands, called "Sky Grassland." 1,200-3,800m altitude, mountains on three sides, river on one.
Routes:
- Sky Grassland Line: Shuttle up to 2,000m+ — panoramic views of grassland, forest, snow peaks. ~4 hours. ¥135
- River Valley Line: Forest and meadow alternating. Horse riding (¥80-150/hour). ¥95
- Panlong Valley: Deep route, grassland + canyon + primeval forest
Recommend at least two routes. Nalati town has many guesthouses (¥200-800/night).
🚶 Day 3: Kalajun Grassland → Tekes Bagua City → Departure
Morning: Kalajun Grassland Praised by UN FAO as "one of the world's rare high-quality natural alpine grasslands." Famous for "Body Grassland" — rolling meadow curves like human body silhouettes, especially beautiful in dawn/dusk light. Crocodile Bay in Koksu Grand Canyon is iconic. Tickets + shuttle ¥140.
Midday: Tekes Bagua City The world's only city without traffic lights (though a few now exist). Entire city laid out in bagua (eight-trigram) pattern — 8 main streets radiating from center. Ferris wheel offers aerial views of the layout. Free.
Afternoon: Fly from Yining to Ürümqi or drive G218.
Budget: ~¥1,000-1,800 budget | ~¥2,500-4,000 comfortable | ~¥5,000+ luxury
