Day 1: Western Xia Tombs (75+20 RMB) → Ningxia Museum (free) → Huaiyuan Night Market
Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227) royal mausoleums — "Pyramids of the East." 9 imperial tombs and 250+ satellite tombs. Earthen mounds stand stark against Helan Mountain. Museum exhibits include Western Xia script steles and gilt-bronze ox. 2-3 hours, 35km from city.
Night market: Huaiyuan spicy strips (5-10 RMB), lamb paomo (15-25 RMB), lamb offal soup (10-15 RMB).
Day 2: Sand Lake (60+70 RMB) + Western Film Studio (100 RMB)
Sand Lake — desert and lake in perfect harmony. Reed marshes with migratory birds, sand dunes for camel riding (50-80 RMB) and sand sliding (20-30 RMB). Boat through reed labyrinth. 56km from city.
Western Film Studio — where "A Chinese Odyssey" and "Red Sorghum" were filmed. Yellow earth walls, wooden fences, dusty inns — step into a Western movie. Rent costumes for photos (30-50 RMB).
Day 3: Helan Mountain Rock Art (70 RMB) → Shuidonggou (60+90 RMB) → Departure
Helan Mountain — tens of thousands of ancient petroglyphs from Paleolithic to Western Xia. Famous "Sun God" rock art. Wild blue sheep spotted on cliffs.
Shuidonggou — one of China's earliest Paleolithic excavation sites. Ming Dynasty Great Wall, military fortresses. Fun transport between sites: boat, horse cart, camel cart, bamboo raft.
