Yulin — Shaanxi's northernmost city, called "Shangjun" in ancient times, one of the Ming Dynasty's Nine Garrison towns. Zhenbeitai is the Great Wall's largest beacon tower — standing atop, loess plateau to the south, Mu Us Desert to the north, one of the "Three Great Wonders of the Great Wall." Red Stone Gorge is Northern Shaanxi's most spectacular danxia canyon — red sandstone cliffs carved with calligraphy from centuries of scholars. Wave Valley (Longzhou Danxia) is China's answer to Arizona's Wave — 96-million-year-old Cretaceous red sandstone sculpted into wave-like patterns. Three days of frontier grandeur, danxia wonders, and profound history in the yellow earth.
Day 1: Red Stone Gorge → Zhenbeitai → Yulin Ancient City
Morning: Red Stone Gorge (¥30)
Northern Shaanxi's most spectacular canyon — Yuxi River flows through red sandstone, cliffs inscribed with 160+ calligraphic works from Song Dynasty to Republic era — "Frontier Stele Forest." Only 20m wide at widest, 30m-high red walls, emerald water contrasting with red sandstone.
Highlights: Cliff inscriptions ("Great Desert Golden Stronghold," "Terror of Nine Frontiers" — bold calligraphy), Yuxi River (green water through red canyon, excellent photos), Song Dynasty cave temples with Buddha carvings. ~1.5 hours.
Noon: Zhenbeitai (¥30)
"First Tower of the Great Wall" — built 1607 AD, 4 stories, 30+ meters, Ming Dynasty's largest military observation post. Views: loess plateau southward, Mu Us Desert northward — farmland meets nomadland, the Wall is the boundary. One of the "Three Great Wall Wonders" (with Shanhaiguan and Jiayuguan).
Afternoon: Yulin Ancient City (Free)
"Little Beijing" — Shaanxi's best-preserved Ming-Qing city. "South Pagoda, North Tower, Six Street Pavilions" layout. Well-preserved courtyard homes, operating shops on old streets. Walk South Street (pedestrian).
Food: Potted Three Fresh (pork + lamb + chicken stew, ¥25-35), oil spiral bread (¥3-5), sheep offal soup (¥10-15), fried bean milk (sweet treat, ¥5-8).
Day 2: Wave Valley (Full Day)
Full Day: Jingbian Wave Valley (¥90, 2.5h drive)
China's "Wave Valley" — 96-million-year-old Cretaceous red sandstone carved into wave-like patterns, strikingly similar to Arizona's. Longzhou is Shaanxi's largest danxia formation.
Highlights: Flame Danxia (most spectacular — red sandstone waves like surging fire), Heart Danxia (looking up from canyon bottom, red walls form a circle like Earth's heart), Water Danxia (red rock around emerald lakes, stunning colors), 3D Danxia (layered patterns like paintings). Route: A, B, C zones, 4-5 hours walking. Comfortable shoes and sun protection.
Day 3: Baiyun Mountain (Jiaxian County) → Departure
Morning: Baiyun Mountain (¥60, 2h drive)
Northwest China's largest Taoist sanctuary — Ming Dynasty, mountaintop overlooking Yellow River Grand Canyon. 100+ buildings, active incense.
Xianglu Temple (¥10, Jiaxian County)
Built on a solitary rock beside the Yellow River — three sides cliff, one side narrow bridge to land. Temple like an incense burner standing above the Yellow River — Northern Shaanxi's most unique photo spot.
Departure: Train from Yulin to Xi'an (~6h) or Baotou (~4h). Yuyang Airport (Beijing/Xi'an flights).
